Instead, most people have their listening habits locked within specific streaming platforms like Spotify or YouTube Music, and rely on them to make that information available to them once a year...

You can get a browser extension that'll scrobble YouTube, soundcloud, Bandcamp, etc. Spotify (at least for now...) still lets you log in, and the majority of local music players I've used have a plugin that scrobble for you. It's just that people stopped using last.fm proper for... Some reason? I think having easy playlist sharing made it so the focus kind of wasn't about the conversation/curation and more about the ease of consumption
