That's the number of times I listened to Opeth before today.

I only remember Blackwater Park (the song) if I am honest.

Last year #Opeth won the battle for #MostLovedMetalBand: https://metalhead.club/@derthomas/111336759990677772

Last week Opeth realeased a new album everyone has been talking about these past few days.

I still don't care much for Opeth.

It is time for a #Metaljourney 🚢

Almost 30 years ago, 4 young Swedes get together in FinspΓ₯ng to make music.
The result is Orchid, the debut album of none other than Opeth.

Opeth does progressive death metal, so wiki says. Seems right that a 14 minute track opens their career and also my #Opeth #Metaljourney

I planned to adapt my rating system for some time now and this #Metaljourney might be a good occasion to test it out.

I am now going for a 10 point system. Also, I am moving away from reserving a full star rating for perfect albums. Perfect albums will get 11.

Now what does this mean for Opeth's Orchid?

It means this:

πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ•πŸŒ‘οΈπŸŒ‘οΈ

Orchid is surprisingly balanced considering all the styles they blended together. The guitars really stood out, there was hadbanging. Very proggy, very deathy, very good!

Can Morningrise keep up with its Orchid?

No. And it is not even close.

Let's start with the positives: the album is a bit more jazzy, I like the tempo changes, I love the guitars and the harmonies.

So what do I have to whine about?

First, it lacks punch, it sounds flat. I did listen to the remastered version and I expected much more. Second: the bass sounds horrible. Third: the vocals sound forced. And it is too long.

Fix that and you have a masterpiece. Like this, best I can do is:

What a lovely morning for the next Opeth album on my #Metaljourney

Next up is "My Arms, Your Hearse" from 1998. What immediately catches my eye is that it is a bit shorter and there's no song beyond the 10 minute mark.

Good, because I felt like Morningrise felt unnecessarily drawn out.

At this exact moment I am blown away by the opener:

Also: the only person I know is Mikael Γ…kerfeldt a.k.a. one of Ghost's guitarists.

Mikael's growls are bone shattering.

Deliverance/Damnation was supposed to be a double album with two very different sides. The record company said no, so we got two separate and very different albums instead.

I know that things would change, but I didn't think that it would be this drastic.

And I absolutely love it. I bet most of the fans hated it initially, because this is not what you expect after a very brutal Deliverance.

And just like that, #Damnation was over.

For some reason I had to think of Foo Fighter's "In Your Honor" double LP, which also had two very different sides. But comparing FF to #Opeth feels very wrong.

The Last Will And Testament is more or less continuing the path they took with Ghost Reveries and Watershed, but it has a more proggy touch and isn't as long-winded. It's less soundtrack and more action opera.

I love it. But there is one thing I didn't like and ironically it is one person I really like: Ian Anderson.

It's like when Ed Sheeran was on Game of Thrones, it broke the illusion, a wall so to say.
There is a difference between "hey, that sounds like Jethro Tull" and "wait a minute, that is actually Jethro Tull".

But this is the only complaint I have really. The album is amazing!

35/35

Thank you, dear Lemmy, for giving us Opeth!

I keep wondering why I didn't listen to them earlier, but honestly, a #Metaljourney was the perfect setting. From My Arms, Your Hearse on it was a romance and with Heritage I fell in love ❀️

Without further ado, here is my final #Opeth album ranking:

1. Pale Communion 10
2. My Arms, Your Hearse 10
3. Still Life 10
4. Blackwater Park 9
5. Sorceress 9
6. In Cauda Veneum 9
7. Heritage 9
8. The Last Will and Testament 9
9. Ghost Reveries 9
10. Watershed 8
11. Orchid 8
12. Damnation 8
13. Deliverance 8
14. Morningrise 6

Gunpoint decision: prog or death Opeth?

Prog ...no death.
No, seriously: death (prog).

@derthomas thanks for sharing these 🀘

curiously enough, even though i've occasionally given the band a listen before, it's when the heritage came out that it really clicked with me. couldn't stop listening to it. i think i learned to appreciate the older stuff afterwards, still life being my other favourite.

@lkundrak thank you for reading! I can see that. Heritage was so different and then it wasn't actually. They used the same tools with different techniques.
Apart from their second album which sounded a bit weird, any album could be someones favourite.
@derthomas I'm really happy you liked them - a great #MetalJourney for a great band 🀘

@yourfutureex what's not to like here? Well, maybe Morningrise...

But seriously I am really curious about your opinion of the different phases of the band.

@derthomas I can do Opeth fangirling 7/24 😁
Joke aside, I was shouting YESSIR when you wrote that they have never abandoned their roots. That is something so many fans of Oldpeth simply overlook. Of course de gustibus non est disputandum, but I believe they are missing out a lot. That said, I'm glad the growls are back 😁
I'm less of a fan of the first two albums simply because of the perceived low production quality. As for Newpeth, I believe they simply need more attention (i.e. proper speakers/headphones) because the style is more intricate and detailed - coincidentally, that's when I started paying attention to the lyrics for earlier albums, too.

@yourfutureex Oldpeth, Newpeth... πŸ˜‚

Maybe it helps if you listen to and appreciate progressive rock too. I listenened to it way before I got into metal and for that reason I think I have a bit of a stronger emotional connection to Newpeth (see how quickly I learn?).

I am really glad I did my Purple, Sabbath, Tull and Heep journeys before because all of this was on ALL Opeth albums.
It always put a big smile on my face when I noticed some Purple organ, some Tull campfire sounds, some doomy Sabbath riffs. And they stayed original despite the crystal clear references.

Now when they actually had Ian Anderson on the last album, I didn't like that to be honest.

@derthomas yesssss, here it is, my fave track since they embarked on their non-growl progg journey!

@OliverUv I don't think it is my favourite but it is a perfect song nontheless.
They put so much into it. Like they are taking everything they did so far and add more.

This song is a grand song, if you know what I mean.

@derthomas I have to listen to the post-death albums again (i liked most of them when they were released), but i think i liked "In Cauda Venenum" the most and it felt like a "return to form" to me.
@Hadeur it is a bit heavier compared to the ones before. And more dramatic.

@derthomas you did good! the Swedish version is the real album and the english was just to appease the record company

I love this album soo much! top 5 for me 🫢🏻

@derthomas New favorite Band incoming? Who would have seen that coming...

@hotte I tend to dislike bands everyone likes. Everyone seems to love Opeth so I avoided this metal journey for so long.

I am an idiot. They are too good to be ignored.

@derthomas Sometimes, there may be a valid reason why something is universally liked.
@derthomas Metal Archives is great for band infos, but its community...
@neurothing I think they were just pissed that they abandoned the metal path. But they are missing out so much here!
@derthomas That's why I have a problem with the Metal Archives community. I respect their (unpaid) work in squirreling metal bands there (I submitted a couple of bands too, in the past), but they are too intransigent when they come to "metality"
@neurothing @derthomas Metal Archives are the ultimate gatekeepers. It is so tiresome.

I personally made a meme about this which you may now appreciate

but yeah, i'm actually glad so many hate these albums because it allows me a way to easily disregard people who have those opinions 😎

@derthomas "I didn't know how much I needed Opeth in my life πŸ–€"
