I used Compac's PC-6001 type-in EXAS BASIC compiler from I/O magazine 1982-11 (errata in 1982-12) and runtime package (in 1983-02). I added a compiled+packaged loader to make a version of the EXAS compiler that runs on mkII/6601 in Mode 2, Pages 2 with no cartridge - it uses back RAM instead. It was compiled using type-in EXAS virtual ROM, then packaged+saved as P6, plus 35 non-zero padding bytes, EXAS lower 4K+upper 4K, and some padding zero bytes. ごかん ROM works for this too
The runtime packaging tool also works using this Tape-loaded EXAS on mkII
These old issues of I/O magazine are currently preserved on the Internet Archive

I/O is an old computer magazine

DumpListEditor checks the checksums while you type, and also highlights other kinds of problems (out-of-order lines, wrong characters, etc.) I use OCR to help with the data entry too, so the wrong-character highlighting is essential

PC6001VX is great for emulating the machines. It even has support for substitute system ROM's in case you don't have this old computer, or have not yet backed up the system ROM images from it
