Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1k/month. A year later, nearly half had housing. They also had fewer ER visits, nights spent in a hospital, and jail stays. The report estimates that this reduction in public service use SAVED the city $589k. www.businessinsider.com/denver-basic...

Denver basic income reduces homelessness, food insecurity

Participants in Denver's basic-income program reported having more-secure housing, though results were similar in the trial and control groups.

Learning the Right Lessons From the Denver Basic Income Project

Posted this 2nd article since the 1st is behind a paywall. I reposted an earlier post with the 1st article (which I had originally posted after reading & summarizing that article) but wasn’t aware that it had been updated because of the paywall. Sorry for the confusion. Will try to get more info.
This illustrates a social media “norm” question that I’ve long been unsure or conflicted about. It hasn’t come up often for me, but once or twice. My 1st instinct when discovering a methodology or factual problem like this is to delete my original post in order to keep confusion from spreading. 1/
2/ But I’ve been told in the past not to do that as it’s “poor social media etiquette,” especially when many have already replied & quote-posted (those would then be “connected to nothing”). I’ve been told it’s better to clarify the situation so people can follow the details themselves. Thoughts?
UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: This thread is worth reading, from @scottsantens.com, on the Denver basic income and homelessness study, and the nuanced importance of its conclusions. bsky.app/profile/scot...

Kudos for honestly trying to work through in real time how to share this stuff coherently and honestly. And thanks for the reskeet of the Santens thread.

@brenttoderian.bsky.social Funny enough, the first article’s paywall is visual only. You can select the full article text and paste it somewhere to read it in its entirety.

(Or adjust the article in the browser’s devtools.)

@brenttoderian.bsky.social Here's the paywall version: https://archive.ph/KuQFF

Note: You can type any story URL into archive.ph and access it.

@brenttoderian.bsky.social I'm confused (probably because I was unable to read the first paywalled article). If there was no statistically significant difference in homelessness after the trial, where did the savings come from?

@jericevans
The second (non paywalled) article is not very helpful or clear other than it does have a link to the actual report.

3 groups were given varying amounts of money. All groups saw significant gains in shelter security (no statistically significant difference between $50/mo or $1k)

The cost savings came from reduced visits hospitals, jails and shelters.

@brenttoderian.bsky.social

How many times do we need to do this study before making it happen?
@brenttoderian.bsky.social @mattferrel.bsky.social It's never been about proof. It's about maintaining a concentration of power.
@brenttoderian.bsky.social @eniko WHAT? You're saying that there is a better way than capitalism? Say it ain't so! 😤
@brenttoderian.bsky.social "but if we don't terrify people that they might die of hunger and exposure, how will we force them to work in unsafe conditions which destroy their emotional and physical health for nearly enough money to survive on?"
@brenttoderian.bsky.social Thanks for sharing, this article was a really interesting read and I think it demonstrates that reducing poverty is still a multi-faceted issue and basic income helps tremendously but is only able to go so far, and other policies must be put in place alongside basic income.
@brenttoderian.bsky.social #PMJT what are we waiting for? It’s time for #UBI #EnoughIsEnough with homelessness. In a country like Canada, there should be no homelessness. It’s a shame and a blight on all of us.
@brenttoderian.bsky.social @publixpace Could you please update the original post? It’s still making rounds and people are not seeing the update, which actually says the opposite of the initial headline and teaser.
@brenttoderian.bsky.social
This works in every city it's been tested in. Hell, they should do it for eveybody.
@brenttoderian.bsky.social man.... It's almost like every single experiment with UBI has positive outcomes yet we still won't implement it

@brenttoderian.bsky.social I had a horrible epiphany just today reading a random USian sci-fi novel (not one with particularly crarzy right-wing values).

There is an actual strong undercurrent of thought that sees getting anything "unearned" as honestly robbing the recipients of their basic freedom and dignity. Interfering this way is seen as Evil - basically same as breaking the Prime Directive.

Being from (fomerly?) social democratic Finland I'd never really grasped this before.

@brenttoderian.bsky.social Colorado genuinely seems like a pretty cool state, I look forward to visiting it soon!
