@tasket @tivasyk @benroyce Either way, this may also be a problem with certain types of algorithms, in which case it's worth studying to hold other platforms accountable who allow or enable similar abuse to happen.

@Arlodottxt @tasket @tivasyk

right

personally i'm not really interested in doing things according to some sort of high minded standard

#democracy is being murdered. fuck lofty principles, this is about expediency

just kill #tiktok. now. any way at all

other #socialmedia also sucks

yes. kill that too. when we can

this notion "you're not killing tiktok properly, other social media is also bad" is some sort of bizarre whataboutism preventing what is necessary. it's ridiculous

kill. tiktok.

@benroyce @Arlodottxt @tasket @tivasyk Have you actually spent time on TikTok?

The abuses of the platform are real and no different than manipulations done via Facebook and Xitter.

While I wouldn’t shed a tear for either of the former, I’d argue that TikTok’s algorithm has had positive unintended consequences to go along with the negative, especially in how it connects minority communities.

It may be the most powerful organizing tool left in the face of Trump.

#JeffYass:

co-owned #tiktok since 2012, helped fund its creation

*the* biggest donor to the #GOP

funded #Israel judiciary corruption for #Netanyahu

"It may be the most powerful organizing tool left in the face of Trump."

if i told you i said i was going to shop at walmart to fight walmart, what would you think of me as an organizer?

'#Trump changed his tune in March after reportedly meeting with #GOP megadonor #JeffYass, who had a major financial stake in the app—he later joined the platform and vowed to "never ban #TikTok."'

again, Jeff Yass, co-owner of TikTok, is the biggest donor to the GOP

anyone who says TikTok is a "tool of resistance" is a complete moron being played for a fool

Trump And TikTok: How His Win Could Impact A Potential Ban

Trump joined TikTok earlier this year and vowed he would never ban the app, which is challenging a ban implemented by the Biden administration.

I've decided to sober up by drinking everything in my liquor cabinet.

@benroyce @Arlodottxt @tasket @tivasyk Ignoring for a moment that some people don’t have a choice but to shop at Walmart however they feel about it and no matter what they might be doing to try to change that situation - I’d say it sounds like you’re meeting people where are.

A better comparison though would be a Walmart being run by a stocking algorithm that unnoticed by its corporate overlords began filling the store with healthier food and more durable items.

There’s a reason the platform is banned in China.

I’m not saying you’re wrong about where the money is going, or about the dangers.

I’m just trying to point out the baby in the bath water. One that doesn’t exist with FB or Xitter, which are still apparently immune to enforcement.

@pliny @Arlodottxt @tasket @tivasyk

"don’t have a choice"

who *has* to use tiktok?

"meeting people where are"

the algorithm means you never meet them on your terms

"unnoticed"

wtf? there is nothing happening they are not aware of

"banned in China"

douyin *is* tiktok. douyin shows kids in china educational material. everyone else gets disinfo. you have it exactly backwards

"FB or Xitter"

"ignore the scorpion, because rattlesnakes exist." i can't fathom this whataboutism

@benroyce @Arlodottxt @tasket @tivasyk Probably because it isn’t “whataboutism”?

My only point is that I believe TikTok, more than other platforms has some redeeming. Enough that a blanket shutdown will do more harm than good.

I hope that Loops can supplant it in time, but this is the reality we’ve got.
