"Competition is the law of the jungle, but cooperation is the law of civilization"
- Peter Kropotkin (1842-1921)

UPDATE:
Thanks to some responders, found out that this “quote” is not an actual quote of Kroptkin. He actually thought the “jungle” showed cooperation as well.

Thanks to some responders, found out that this “quote” is not an actual quote of Kroptkin. He actually thought the “jungle” showed cooperation as well. Though he was arguing that it should be a core characteristic of humans as well.

@rberger very similar to how I describe capitalism.

Capitalism is a wild stallion. Strong, Fast, and highly unlikely to plow your fields regularly.

reins and tackle are the gov't regulation needed to harness that power for society.

Too tight or too lose and you won't get much work done either. Finding the balance is the tricky part

@rberger
No, this is a purely darwinian view of nature. The law of the Jungle is a large exhibition system of #cooperation, where every living being connected to the other, on earth, in air and below the earth.
We humans are also part of #nature.

@rberger hi, do you have any source for this quote ? It feels a little off Kropotkine view of the world

@blickbluck Yep, you are correct now that I look into it. I should have known better to just repost a meme like that without checking.
Looks like its a common misquoting of Kropotkin.

Found this thread on the subject:

“To quote Shaun Pitt, "You probably already know this but the quote doesn't fit Kropotkin's view of 'the jungle' as he saw mutual aid [in animals and even] in the most 'simple' organisms…”

@rberger Actually, in Mutual Aid as Driving Force in Nature, he argues that cooperation is part of nature too and it can be observed.
