The Moon's largest crater, the South Pole–Aitken Basin, spans approximately 2,500 km (1,550 mi) in diameter and plunges as deep as 8.2 km (5.1 mi).

Recent research suggests the basin contains anomalously dense material buried beneath its surface, possibly remnants of the impactor that made the basin itself.
