This snow bowl (Steelers/Browns) is really illustrating the limits of Prime Video compression of live events.

Snow and confetti are compression’s mortal enemies.

@tvaziri had the same thought. Tricky!
@tvaziri When I compressed 160x120 road pizza (QT 1.0) for Ephemeral Films and Baseball’s Greatest Hits, I had to use 10fps and record off laser with different card settings and compression values overnight as it was 6:1 compression time. I’d come in the morning and watch 15 versions to find the best one with 22k audio and under 90kbps to play well off CD-ROM lol
@steveriggins @tvaziri This jogged my memory of digitizing laserdisc clips in college for some research project and the lab had a super expensive (and super flaky) HW compression accelerator card in the Mac, but that’s as far as my memory goes.
@nedley @tvaziri ours was a wire wrapped card from SuperMac that Apple loaned us as nothing was on the market yet. The code name was Touchstone, I believe.
@tvaziri and yet a ton of music presentations keep using confetti…
@tvaziri Do you ever consider the effects of compression and do fewer particle effects or very dark scenes, especially for things that won’t have a theatrical release? (You as in the whole team both at ILM and the client)

@nloveladyallen nope

that’s not what we are hired to do
