Thursday morning update on the volcanic eruption north of Grindavîk, Iceland.

- Lava has flowed across the Grindavíkurvegur (Grindavík road), as seen in the map below
- There was no electricity in Grindavík and the Svartsengis power plant went out during the event. Electricity is back on in Grindavik.
- Lava has crossed the Njarðvíkuræð pipeline, which supplies hot water from Svartsengi to Fitjar
- The eruptive fissure has shortened

The lava from the eruption north of Grindavîk, Iceland has reached the Blue Lagoon parking lot. In the photo, workers are creating a new barrier towards the Blue Lagoon itself. The lagoon was evacuated last night.

@AkaSci the peninsula is right on the friking crack opening up the atlantic sea floor and spewing new rock.

I like to show this to my 3 and 4 yr old nephews. we check on iceland every few weeks

Here is another diagram that shows the geology of Iceland.

Iceland lies on the divergent boundary between the Eurasian plate and the North American plate. It also lies above a hotspot, the Iceland plume, which is believed to have caused the formation of Iceland itself, the island first appearing over the ocean surface about 16-18 million years ago.

The eruption area is located in the Reykjanes peninsula SW of Reykjavik.
