Reading the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024 release and it's very funny.

This is labor brain. a bunch of people in NSW did a survey and now they think they can win 87% of swing voting parents who don't know how to talk to their kids about anything?

They could have done the right thing and banned ads and algorithmic targeting for under 16s... that' would have made sense?

also, minecraft isn't included in the bill because they're cowards?

Setting new social norms? this is truely.. we're tried nothing and we're all out of ideas bill 2024.
@shlee someone should ask them when they first drank alcohol
@shlee kids love to have social norms imposed on them by the government
@jimbob @shlee what about Roblox?
@jimbob @shlee kids will just build socmed in minecraft anyway
@morebento @shlee to be fair Roblox should be burnt to ground and the earth salted. Leave Minecraft alone though.
@jimbob I guess using social media is now junk
@jimbob @shlee Oh kids love that, almost as much as parents love being told how to parent.
@shlee this should really be called the "Technology Skills Enhancement (VPN and server hosting) Bill 2024"
@shlee Do you have any insight on how this will or won't affect mastodon instances? I realise the chances of our government even knowing of mastodon is zero, so I assume we'll be dealing with splash damage here.

@hugepedlar Short answer is. not a bean.

I spoke with the government years ago and we're considered a hobby until this particular instance hits like 1 million active users.

(subject to change)

@shlee Of course. So kids can still join social networks, just not commercially regulated ones. Excellent work, Canberra.
@shlee last time the ALP fucked around with Minecraft was when deniable ALP right faction asset and unlistenable YouTuber “FriendlyJordies” and his followers griefed a Young Greens Minecraft server

@shlee It’s not going to meet the expectations of the people lobbying for it, it is going be a compliance headache, it’s populist busywork and it’s validating the cost of age-assurance digital ID trials.

It’s first order malarkey.
