Debunking Hype: China Hasn't Broken Military Encryption With Quantum

Recent headlines have proclaimed that Chinese scientists have hacked "military-grade encryption" using quantum computers, but it's not true.

@Xavier That was in October, maybe things have changed, maybe not. Why show me an old post?
@techygeek That story was debunked. The research paper was published in May and folks keep posting articles claiming they've broken modern algorithms. That's not true.
@Xavier It's so silly that sites do that but thanks for the heads up. I just try to share whatever I've read that I think can be informative.
@techygeek Yeah, the news story is "new developments in quantum". We getting closer, but the folks I trust to know this area tell me that we're still quite a ways from anything that can crack today's encryption.
@Xavier I hope so lol. It's like people are trying to see thru my dwelling even with the blinds down.

@techygeek Arstechnica is rubbing rock salt in the wound. Apparently this is not the first time the South China Morning Post published "lies" about the demise of encryption.

Here’s the paper no one read before declaring the demise of modern cryptography

The advance was incremental at best. So why did so many think it was a breakthrough?
