I’m looking to run a Mass Effect one-shot for my group. I have a vague story in place, but I need a system. We usually play D&D, that’s not going to work for a laser blasters n’ space mysteries game. I immediately thought of Stars Without Number, but as much as I *loved* the SWN game I played in, it seems like combat was difficult and not encouraged. That could just be the way my DM ran it, though! Ideally, I’d find a system that’s easy to get up-and-running, not too complicated.

And I just saw that there is in fact a Mass Effect 5e homebrew floating around out there, but I’d like for us to start dipping our toes into other systems.
@casey I had pretty good luck running a space opera game with Genesys (basically the Edge of the Empire RPG minus the Star Wars theme). It has a pretty novel dice mechanic that favors quick success/failure with side helpful or hindering side effects. I had to homebrew a lot of it though.
@casey Offworlders is my go-to for action oriented SF. The default mode is obviously Firefly level, but it’s simple enough you can probably tinker with it without it being too difficult.
@Billtempleton ooh, I'm looking at this right now and it seems like this might work really well for my needs. Thanks!
@casey Honestly Lasers And Feelings might work for this? It's WILDLY rules-light, to about the most extreme degree possible, and it skews towards absurdity in my experience, but it is very fun for a one-shot.
@nickdrawthing oh dang, this looks extraordinarily fun. Even if I don't use it for the ME game, I think I'd want to try it out anyway.
@casey With the right group it is an absolute BLAST. I hope you get the chance to try it out!
