@AllKeysGDS Is this the one you played briefly? I think i remember you saying that the lack of an English dub pushed it further down the list compared to one like Tales of Arise/Berseria, or Trials of Mana, or even your romp through Xenoblade (sp?)
Or am i thinking of something else?
@AllKeysGDS @yon Got it.
I only know Ryza from fanart, where people draw her with the curves that her in game model only approximates lol
@AllKeysGDS @NaClKnight They know what they are doing. The amount of merch is directly proportional to the fan service (sometimes honestly in a detrimental way).
Considering GUST’s usual budget a dub would not have been, above average. That said they are really good at using their budget.
I personally love the dubs for Xenoblade, especially all the British voices. Nia/Pyra has great accents. One of my favorite series.
But I’m very comfortable with subtitles. Can’t get through a trailer of a dubbed anime and I grew up on subtitles (even before I learnt English), so that’s not a hindrance for games for me.
(No hate on how people want to consume media, everyone should do their thing.)
@yon @AllKeysGDS Yeah, at this point, i know that the fans of these games are generally dismissive of dubs in general, and frequently decry English voices as inferior and dubs as wastes of resources.
The studios signal who these games are for by such choices and their fans react in kind.
Those games aren't meant for me and i am wholly unwilling to force the issue. Plenty of other things for me to play and investigate.
My Anilist includes a dedicated section for things i want to watch but that have no English dub. It's not that i won't ever watch them, but it does me represent an easy way to deprioitize them
@NaClKnight @AllKeysGDS People are dreadful at separating “I think this” and “everyone must think this or my view is threatened”. Just let people enjoy what they want when it comes to something as benign as just entertainment.
I can’t stand it, but I’d still argue they should get a dub. Why should I not want you to be able to enjoy something?
Btw I think it has to do with the style for me. Half the games I play in English (you can’t afford to pay me to play a Swedish dub) just fine, and I watch animation in English. Arcane is great!
That said, I don’t think GUST refuses to dub, I think they can’t afford it. Even a cheap one. The subtitles alone might be a stretch. I wonder if they’ll end up dubbing their next game. Ryza sold well enough that the next game clearly got a better budget. We’ll see in March.
Which will be a snooze for you and a tough choice for me. Monster Hunter, Xenoblade, and new Atelier. Crazy! (I’m getting and playing all.)
@yon @AllKeysGDS The new MH looks interesting and my FGC friends sweeeeaaaar that the newest one is actiony enough to hold my interest. The last one i tried was the one on 3DS, which felt more like survival and crafting than fighting.
i may end up owning it if they push me hard enough
@NaClKnight @AllKeysGDS The grind is the game. The game loop is very specific and I think it’s a love or hate game. You don’t casually sink 300-1000hrs into them.
The newer ones are different beasts from anything on the 3DS for sure. It really has a specific type of combat. But if you like a game where the difference between button mashing and play is distinct you might enjoy it:) The different weapons are like different fighters. And as long as you can craft it you can play it (you get a base version of all as well). No need to roll a new character and start over.
I think you might enjoy the character creator if nothing else. :)
It appeals to my most addictive tendencies for sure. Loved Rise.
@yon @AllKeysGDS Yeah, i hear you. But "The Grind is the game" also applies to my multiplayer titles like Halo and Street Fighter. The difference is that there i can feel my reactions and thought processes tightening and improving. I am getting better at the game. My character is not.
In those RPGs it feels like my character is getting better v at the game and i am not. not really.
Weapon Types in Soulslikes also function like different characters, to say nothing if running magic or faith builds.
I think the crafting aspect is still the least exciting part for me but if i think of it like grinding a specific item drop in a Soulslike it sounds a lil more palettable
if i pick it up I'll let you know!
@NaClKnight @AllKeysGDS That’s very true! I think MH is kind of in between, and has similarities to a souls like. I wouldn’t actually call it an RPG on account of virtually no story. The story of Rise is basically “monsters attack, go kill!”:)
While something like Final Fantasy VII or Xenoblade you can spend hours talking about the story and have lots left.
You could think of the crafting as partial drops from the monsters. Basically beat A enough times to get materials to build weapon A. Now you beat monster B to make weapon B, etc.
While the weapons get better, they also start to have more variations. So it’s a bit like customizing and not just values that go up (which I find lazy in RPGs!).
Plus there’s a lot of timing and such. It plays out slower (how depending on the weapon) but the timing doesn’t have a big window. Plus each monster has its own patterns you need to learn or you will be cooked.
Basically you can’t button mash, you will be toast.
I’d say that Monster Hunter is a genre itself. Bummer you missed the beta. Might have gotten a feel. I just got frustrated because I wanted the whole game, it didn’t even let me craft! Still played 20 hours :)
Report back if you try it. I’m genuinely curious. I bet you will either play 5 or 500 hours :)
@yon @AllKeysGDS IRL i was never much for track and field aside from watching the Olympics
I played basketball and football till the beginning of college when i swapped over to training martial arts
why do you ask?
@NaClKnight @AllKeysGDS I was always told that it was about beating yourself, and I at once didn’t care one bit. I have zero driving force in beating myself. And some video games feel like that to me.
Which is why I more often than not tend to prefer story/progress. Figuring out can also be a motivator to a degree.
I was always mostly shit at sports myself, but enjoy winning. Did martial arts too and enjoyed it to a degree, but I never had the drive so I could never get much good at it and kinda just drifted away from it.
I often think about that though. How some are driven my shaving seconds or adding cms, while I see it philosophically impossible to loose or win against myself.
I should be asleep. Monday will suck extra much.
@NaClKnight @AllKeysGDS Hehe, I don’t think it’s your genre at all:) And that’s imho fine.
Your wife has good taste in games though :)
(I’d argue that the majority of anything anime like is kind of ridiculous by nature. With some sprinkles of absolute emotional destruction out of nowhere.)
@yon @AllKeysGDS Yeah, she and i stay in different lames with some cherished exceptions. Tales, Atelier, Dragon Quest, Xenoblade, etc, are all the wrong kind of Action RPG for me. Too much exp grinding, not enough twitch reaction or execution emphasis
i know she feels that way about my fighting games and Soulslikes.
it's nice to get to experience other games and genres secondhand though
@NaClKnight @AllKeysGDS How does she feel about my beloved Nier:Automata? My favorite game, with the amazing music and story.
(The fighting isn’t very intricate, so it’s not a game to play for the mechanics usually.)
Wife hated the music from second hand exposure. That sadden me.
@NaClKnight @yon yes, we discussed before how there are certain points in Xenoblade right now where I simply must level up for my strategies in fights to matter at all. Gotta grind. I appreciate that the quests are the main mode for gathering experience because I like a silly side story and getting to see the NPCs have a personality.
I don't have a lineage of playing twitch reaction or git gud games with anyone. I grew up on solo RPGs. It's cool watching others play diff genres.
@AllKeysGDS @NaClKnight My go to in all RPGs is to over level so I can churn through rather than scrape by. While I don’t enjoy a lot of grind, it usually depends on the game. Plus I finish *all* side quests and don’t think I’ve finished a game in less than half what the websites says it should take :)
All Xenoblades are closer to or above 200h for me.
I find people who are passionate about something I’m not fascinating. That passion in and by itself makes it interesting. So I watch people like that, as long as they talk and do things. Just watching some just straight up play bores me.
(Super enjoyed Heavenly Father and Zen return to teach IronMouse to play Tekken 8 I believe on stream. And then her challenging chat. Made it more personal and fun:) Plus she’s not half bad and that was fun too:))
