What Remains of the Abandoned Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church?

Yet another of Philadelphia's gorgeous churches lies in ruins. Find out what's left on Abandoned America.

@AbandonedAmerica Turn that thing into a music venue
@AbandonedAmerica Huh, the organ was left there?? What in the world...?
@toadofsky @AbandonedAmerica they're *incredibly* difficult to move. If you don't have a buyer lined up, it just doesn't make sense. And if they go very long unused they're also difficult to render functional again.
Unfortunately you see that a lot, I think: valuable things left behind because no one wanted it at the time; value only counts if you can sell it when you have it.
@Hasufin @AbandonedAmerica Perhaps I need to get into this market!! People and colleges generally aren't looking on craigslist for pipe organs, but now I want one.
@Hasufin @AbandonedAmerica Rather, you mentioned that some are immovable and I should trust your claim although I am curious about the cost compared to the cost of making new pipe organs.
@toadofsky @AbandonedAmerica I think it's that it's very costly/difficult to move one AND if it's unused for long (e.g. in an abandoned church) it's also costly to restore. Add those up, plus convenience, and if it's not removed when the church is officially closed, it doesn't happen.
@Hasufin @toadofsky pretty much spot on. There's also the issue of storage and ubiquity. It's hard to find homes for pianos now, let alone huge pipe organs
@toadofsky yep. It's hard to find homes for them, they're not much in demand any more, take up lots of space, and are very expensive to move.
@AbandonedAmerica Tragic and at the same time, I want to create a waiting list or market since building a new organ surely must be more expensive.

@AbandonedAmerica
Wow, what a beautiful space. I hate to see places like that just rotting, it's almost distressing.

Yeah "it should be a music venue" comes up a lot, but do these areas have enough people who go out enough to provide the money a place like this would need to stay functioning?

@mick_collins it is sad to see them left to rot, I agree. And reuse is always the problem. If you're in an impoverished area, adaptive reuse possibilities are limited or nonexistent
@AbandonedAmerica I understand why it happens, but I always lament these spaces were not repurposed.
