In 1814 Paraguay forbade European-only marriages as part of their post-colonial reckoning. My keyword searches are failing to find out if other Central or #SouthAmerican countries enacted similar laws and how #historians discuss the impetus & outcome of these laws. In other words: What other countries forced interracial marriages and did this successfully lead to racial equality?

Can #histodons help a girl out?

@alessa_ed that is the first time I have heard of such a law. Fascinating.
@jayalane 1st time for me, too. I only stumbled down this rabbit hole because I met a new neighbor and I thought I heard her say she was from Paraguay and I figured I would take the time to read a bit about her home country. As it turned out, she from Uruguay, so this is all a happy little accident and I want to learn more.

@alessa_ed Hi! Don't have a direct answer to your question, but making a search in Spanish I found 2 books about the topic that may help:

"Las consecuencias" and "El mestizaje del Paraguay como identidad nacional y mito nacionalista" by Barbara Potthast-Jutkeit.
