In the Discord Android notification settings, what is the difference between "direct messages" and "messages"?
@mcc probably channel messages on channels where you've got it set to notify on all messages.
@gsuberland "probably"?

@mcc I say "probably" because you need several complicated flow diagrams to follow the way notifications are processed in Discord.

and that's not hyperbole, Discord made a whole bunch of flow diagrams to describe it because it's too complicated to just write out.

@mcc like just off the top of my head you have mobile app settings configurable at the iOS/Android level, which are client-instance-specific, then you've got global default settings at the account level, server-specific settings, then channel-specific settings. and then you've got state-specific behaviours on top, e.g. away mode and the "notify anyway" override, and complexities with group and role highlights, at-here / at-everyone. plus DMs and non-server group DMs. it's genuinely absurd.
@mcc but Discord notif settings (especially the defaults) are cuckoo bananas so who knows

@mcc - great point!
A message is a message is a message.
A "direct message" is an oxymoron.

The real distinction is between a message and a "group message", but the mug punters at fb never quite got that distinction, and so the idiocy of DM and PM persists.

@mcc the writing style. Direct one are .. very to the point and don't dispense with smalltalk and niceties.
