last night to distract myself I decided it was time to finally play Xenogears. For those not in the know, Xenogears is the PS1 game that both the Xenosaga and Xenoblade series are spiritual sequels to, and you all know I am utterly obsessed with Xenoblade.

Unsurprising, but: Xenogears is good as hell. The distraction only worked for a few hours but definitely glad I finally gave it a go

This game does rule but I do not understand the combat
This guy is Franz. He helps steer the sand boat in the desert. There has been no explanation yet of why he is a dolphin
Nobody else in this game is a dolphin. Everyone else I’ve met is either a person or a weird monster
This game has two different turn based combat systems and then like a dozen hours in they suddenly decide it’s time for an arcade style fighting game
I feel like I finally kind of get the combat in this system and then they're like "here's a new party member. unlike everyone else he uses guns. here's a bunch of new gun and ammo mechanics"

I have heard for years that Disc 2 of Xenogears is not a finished game. And I'm sure that's true. But speaking as someone who is pretty sure he is close to the end of Disc 1:

Disc 1 of Xenogears is not finished either

Wow. This game has given me a lot to think about
I have finished the first disc of Xenogears and it is very good! But it reminds me of Evangelion a bit in that it starts out so confident and cool but then you can really feel the wheels start to fall off as the thing drives down the road. Although in Evangelion’s case that leads to some of my favorite stuff so maybe Disc 2 of Xenogears is gonna rock my socks
Update: it’s not rocking my socks! It is actually pretty bad
I think this game would have been pretty great if it were finished but it would also be like 300 hours long

in fairness, after I tooted this I hit a good patch, there was like an hour or so of really good stuff

most of it is just high concentrations of nonsense. It reminds me of a lot of the deep Evangelion lore. Like if you are the kind of person who goes wild about the First Ancestral Race and the Doors of Guf and the Dead Sea Scrolls and all that shit, Xenogears Disc 2 is very much for you

Real "I'll have to watch a youtube lore explainer about this later" kind of stuff
good news, there's a youtube channel that did a whole series on it. It's about 40 hours long https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJCH8faf6GaxQ_7bA7cD0lROu3yMRmwh5

It's so funny how I keep hearing they "ran out of time" to make this game when the reality is they built an entirely functional, feature-complete arcade style 3d fighting game, within this game, which is only used for like half an hour and then you completely move on from it.

I have nearly finished Xenogears. I'm stuck on the final boss, I'll keep trying to push through but if it takes more than a few more attempts I might just look up a playthrough of the ending. Overall I'm really glad I played it. the lows are low but the highs are SO high.

Also it's funny to me how much stuff in this game got recycled and/or remixed into the Xenoblade games! I think Xenoblade does it better

finished it! officially killed god
I do eventually intend to play the xenosaga games but I feel like I need a xenobreak
in Xenogears, as in life, you gain new special powers when a weird guy prescribes you SSRIs
also in xenogears, this happens

I'm not done saying things about xenogears I guess

One thing I've seen in lots of scifi and fantasy media is a sense of inspiration from gnosticism, kaballah, neoplatonism, and psychoanalysis, but only aesthetically, because it's cool. looking at you evangelion

the interesting thing about xenogears is that it incorporates that stuff but actually in a way that's interested in engaging with the idea content. I like that!

it also makes me want to think more about those elements in the xenoblade games. I don't think I realized until playing gears just how seriously Tetsuya Takahashi takes that stuff. I guess I kind of assumed he was just playing around with them
apparently this official music video for the xenogears end credits song played on MTV in Japan? it's kind of a slapdash repurposing of the unfortunately infrequent anime cutscenes from the game but it kind of rules https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks_KEC1uKhI

@tom I remember people talking a lot about those elements in xenogears and xenosaga, but never hearing much mention of it in relation to Xenoblade. I guess I always assumed it wasn't as big a factor there.
@tom I'm not sure whether I'm more angry that you're gonna get me into apocrypha and Kabbalah and gnostic lore, or that you're gonna get me into Xenogears.
@tom normal dolphins are also weird monsters in a way so i think this makes sense
