sorry for like, all the posts looking at the fediverse as a whole lately, the huge explosion in popularity that bluesky/atproto has had this year has made me want to look into what they're doing right that we're not
I ultimately want what's best for the fediverse, and in doing so we kind of have to step back and ask "what does the average person think? why did they leave? are we making any substantial progress towards anything?"
I'm critical of mastodon right now because as the most common server software on fedi, they should be trying to lead development and implement new things, not resting on its laurels and tweaking the UI every six months. activitypub also seems stagnant, I haven't seen anything new being actually incorporated into the spec that much. I've only seen promises of "a grant has been given to Mastodon to research a thing"
if I had the coding chops I'd just try and make my own fedi software stack because at this point there needs to be a shake-up. atproto taking the lead is a wake-up call, we need to be doing more if we want to be successful
@unlock hehe. I think more people, especially on here, need to understand that activitypub and atproto can and should coexist and learn from each other! they're both different approaches to the same idea and I think it's important that people here who care about federation understand how both work :P
