We don't need to buy a Sun NAS server, we have one at home

The Sun NAS server at home:

@catsalad paired with the Ferrari laptop😂
@catsalad Those Acer Ferrari laptops are so cool!!
@catsalad Well that's just delightfully unholy.
@catsalad the Ferrari laptop sells it.
@catsalad We also don't need Kubernetes, as we have Containers at home.
@catsalad Given that you can buy 1TB Micro SD cards now, why doesn't someone make a RAID system out of them?
@mike805 @catsalad, because you need to replace them, every second month.
@Makuru @catsalad Get the sort of high endurance cards that people use in dashcams.

Brando Workshop
@catsalad „how do you install it?“ – „Sunny side up.“
@catsalad I did the same thing with USB Zip drives when I was in college. (The NAS failed quite frequently.)
@catsalad I had one of those very USB drives as conference swag. They were so cheap they were almost lighter than air.
@catsalad sadly I cannot find the video anymore where the picture is from. It's one of my most loved YouTube classics. ❤️
How to Save the World With ZFS and 12 USB Sticks: 4th Anniversary Video Re-Release Edition

About 4 years ago, a few colleagues and myself got together and we created a short video about the coolness of two of the most innovative products from Sun of the last decade: ZFS and the X4500 Server. Today, nearly 4 years later, the video has been downloaded more than …

Constant Thinking

@catsalad Wait, isn’t this a screenshot of this funny „ZFS on USB sticks“ video back from 2012?

EDIT: 2011 🫠

@catsalad Scary thing is I spent several years in the early 2000s working on a Sun NAS: about 8ft tall, 3ft deep and 12ft long and stored a massive 3Tb...Which is what that zip tied USB monstrosity probably can handle in the size of the SCSI connectors that had to be used.
@rbairwell @catsalad
That sounds very similar to the IBM Dolphin I bought in 1999 for Capital Radio. Had to put it in the basement because it was too heavy to sit anywhere else.
@catsalad perhaps a few details - I keep thinking about building a cluster from old cell phones & memory sticks, wondering what it is that you've assembled there - hardware, software, etc!

@catsalad what is this :mumei_flushed:

@catsalad coming soon on Linus Tech Tips

"I built a 2 PB production server from USB sticks, some string, and cello tape"

This is so cursed

@catsalad Wow, that throws me back in time when I was a junior sysadmin at my first job.
@catsalad Use one of those for this setup and you're good to go

@catsalad I like your Ferrari
@catsalad way faster, more reliable, energy saving and of higher capacity than the 3,5" #Floppy #RAID that @ActionRetro once did.

@catsalad Neat. How much space is on that?
@catsalad surely the ferrari laptop makes it faster too????
@catsalad I have unironically always wanted to do something like this.

@catsalad

Judicious use of zip ties.
