I’m sorry, but I’m not going to be able to host #pancakescon this year and I’m going to have to cut off mentoring after currently registered appointments. I hope I’m somewhere safe and stable to resume them in the future. All SANS classes, clinics, and announced talks are on through April. I will not be making any cons beside those in the foreseeable future.
There was this eerie moment driving home from work late last night where turning into my neighborhood I passed a convoy of slow rolling Trump flag vehicles with very conspicuously armed passengers. I slept on my dad’s floor last night. I know exactly what their point was.
@hacks4pancakes You probably won’t see this, but I’ve followed you for a long time because we both work cyber in critical infrastructure. Anyway, the story you are telling is chilling. Retired military, martial arts instructor, gun owner, and profession incident handler - and yet cannot feel safe in their country! It makes me mad, sad, and afraid all at the same time. I welcomed COVID into the global picture drinking scotch in Perth after a trip to some large OT sites. I hope you can make a new home in Australia. I really do. I’m sorry for your loses.
@vpz it’s not so much not feeling like I can’t defend myself from attack. It’s that my legal rights are going to be demolished and our society is going to lose stuff like medical care and environmental protections, food safety, weather services. That’s harder to get around unless you’re off grid. And I don’t want to be gaslit into thinking what they do to vulnerable people is okay.
@hacks4pancakes Yes, yes. That is my point. Someone who is eminently qualified to defend is having to make these difficult decisions. That is the rub.
@vpz I’ve held a lot of very talented, smart, tough people sobbing in bathrooms and hallways over the last 48 hours.
@hacks4pancakes it’s heartbreaking. Thank you again for sharing. Your story helps make it real. Real consequences. I’m tired so not very eloquent. It’s helping us grieve.
