Awful news for sustainable transportation in the US.

At least one bright spot: #California, which will continue to chart its own courseβ€”symbolized by its massive high-speed rail project. James Fallows argues construction has reached "point of no return" :

Even Under Trump, California (Yes, That Hellscape) Will Keep Moving the World Forward

The state has been written off as a woke wasteland. But it’s still inventing the future on a bunch of frontiers nobody’s talking about. For the next four years, it will remain a golden, global example.

WIRED

And of course, just awful news in general. The most important job in the world has been given to the worst man in America.

I'm reeling, but I'm not going to give up living, hoping, and sharing the good things that are happening in the world.

@straphanger and we will keep on reading what you write, rejoicing with you… and trying to make new joyful things happen in Europe and elsewhere ! Do not remember who said : the story always ends well. If it is not ending well, it means that it is not ending yet !

@straphanger The Cincinnati Subway would argue that there is no point of no return.

I can see a tech billionaire/right-wing thinktank buying the surviving part of the viaduct and turning it into a monument about the folly of believing in a common good (β€œsocialism”) rather than trusting the Invisible Hand, complete with a Bible quote about the Tower of Babel.

@acb Anything is possible. But they'd have to buy a lot more than a viaduct! Work is really far advanced.

@straphanger "Reached the point of no return"...

We have bike lanes designed, built, ribbon cut, and well used, that are under threat of being ripped out by the Ontario Provincial government (not the government that even runs the roads they're on). Nothing is EVER past the point of no return. Everything is under threat. We must never become complacent.

But also....it's never too late to make a difference, re: climate change, re: US democracy.
