I may be one of these people. At least for the more obscure places, the highway pullouts and national forests and things, if I see another person parked there, I’ll typically park next to them. Safety in numbers, the more people parked in a turnout, the more legitimate it looks to park there

I agree with the other commenter. Parking next to someone makes it look more legitimate. Or perhaps that person knows better where it is legal to park.
Parking should follow urinal rules. Never use the stall right next to someone else unless it is the only remaining option. Especially if there is only one person at the urinals so far…

Open street maps.

Turn off location sharing on Google maps. You have your location shared with everyone and Google marks your location as good parking.

We had a talk where i told him rooming with people is difficult because in every situation I’ve been in the roommates have always been antagonistic and selfish. I have a different theory to “safety in numbers”, “GPS locator” etc
Namely that we live in a simulation and this is how the simulation is trying to preserve computing power. If two people park separately in the wilderness somewhere then twice as much area has to be computed. However if the simulation guides the second and other subsequent vehicles to the same place then there’s only one area that is actively observed and needs to have random encounters with wildlife generated.

Today I am in a large parking lot that is only 5% occupied. This family pulls in and parks away from me but doesn’t shut off their car. Then a minute later they back out of that space and attempt to back in to the spot right next to me. The wife got out of the car to guide the husband into the spot. The entire parking lot is wide open!!! WTF? They didn’t even have the courtesy of parking one over from me. Definitely, it’s the Simulation fucking with me.
Seems to apply to urinals too. There’s a whole open row, don’t pick the one next to me.
I’m going to the first open one 99% of the time. If you don’t want people next to you, make sure you go all the way to the end.
