But ultimately I think interoperability comes from compliance with existing internet standards, not from venture capital funded startups cooking up their custom protocols for federation...

It's a little bit like Bluesky vs ActivityPub, but things are worse because we cannot have end-to-end encryption without a common encryption standard for example.
