Nothing pisses me off as much as sites that have 'Sign In' links that open in a new window (looking at you today, #SuperSo).

I mean, some things do piss me off more, and some things less. But nothing precisely as much.

#UX

@Setok why? I don’t know why they’d do that but I also don’t know why it’d piss someone off.

@kaplag I don’t want new windows to appear without me explicitly asking for them. Especially for a core functionality of a site. It messes navigation, and my desktop. Doubly bad on mobile.

In general I would prefer if sites never opened new windows from clicks. But if they have to, at most only for links that reach outside the site or for things like ToS or help files (but even then it’s debatable).

@kaplag Famed #UX consultancy #NielsenNorman give some very good reasons why websites shouldn’t open links in new windows:

Opening Links in New Browser Windows and Tabs

Carefully examine the user’s context, task at hand, and next steps when deciding whether to open links to documents and external sites in the same or a new browser tab.
