@GottaLaff @gerald where as in Australia the Electoral Commission contacts 17 year olds to make sure they register so that they can vote on their 18th birthday if need be.

The U.S. system is so weird.

@fraser @GottaLaff @gerald The US was founded with principles of limiting the franchise. Initially it was limited to land owning men. Legally it has expanded repeatedly so it is now most adults. (Non Citizens, the legally incompetent, and some former or current prisoners are the only legal exclusions.)

Unfortunately one political viewpoint has benefited from the limited franchise, fights against any expansion, and makes concerted efforts to remove it from blocks of people.
