WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK

TWICE IN TWO DAYS WHY

#biking #seattle #burkegilmantrail #burkegilman

@moira is this one in Seattle proper? Could be a good submission for the cars in bike lanes account if so
@jenbanim yes same as the last one and very close to it in fact, see alt text

@moira

i dunno. seems like a nice little lane though.

kind of lane that's probably, or at least could likely be, private.

(is that "out on the moors", Moira ?)

@ajaxStardust it’s the burke-gilman trail, the first rail-to-trail, and the most important bike corridor in the seattle area.

and definitely not for cars.

@moira

ahhh. dang.

that's terrible. and it's (obviously) not a forest ranger (municipal/ gvt plates)?

what is "rail to rail"?

People do the "Appalachian Trail" around here (penna). i reckon perhaps similar.

@ajaxStardust Oh yeah even we don't have in-city forest rangers in Seattle. xD This is an urban trail, a commuter route.

If you follow it long enough you can get to some actual wild area trails - Burke Gilman to Sammamish River to... Tolt Pipeline, going east, would let you get into the foothills where you can get some actual forest trails.

"Rail to Trail" is a programme of adapting abandoned rail right-of-ways into bike and walking trails. Originally conceived in part as a way of keeping them available for re-use as railroad trails, walkers and bicyclists became a big constituency.

If you want to look at the bike maps I maintain, you can find a lot of them, and even this location.

@moira

Oh yeah! I've heard of that abandoned railway thing. that's cool!

ha! i had to re-read your first paragraph a few times. What... why no forest rangers? Oh. that's right. Urban.
I thought you said rural. i was like...

aahhggghh now i gotta read it all over again!
🥿 🦽 🤸‍♂️ 👩‍🦽 🤸‍♂️ 🧍‍♂️

@ajaxStardust ah yeah, well, we're a city that's near-rainforest and near to rainforests. people find us ... surprisingly green? even in the winter, when we don't think so.

(see also "the emerald city")

@moira I saw one earlier this evening too, a couple miles north of Matthews beach. I neglected to to take a picture as I was blocking and redirecting the driver who seemed to be doing some kind of delivery as she had a bunch of boxes in the back of her Honda Odyssey. She didn’t seem to understand English and was slow to get my pointing but eventually backed up and went on the lakeside road
@dgodon okay three times is enemy action, _something_ is up. Somebody's maps are fucked.

@dgodon Because same place basically.

Both of mine were Burke Gilman near NE 130th.

@moira not sure about the cross-street but it was close to that
@moira yeah that does seem like more than a coincidence
@dgodon It doesn't appear to be Google - well, at least, Maps isn't letting me send a car down Burke-Gilman even if I try.
@dgodon Doesn't look like Apple Maps either, it's not even putting me on Burke-Gilman if I tell it to go by bike xD
@moira Waze?
@dgodon That uses Google's maps... and a quick test replicates Google's route selection so I think it's okay.
@moira strange! Hopefully the trend doesn’t continue
@dgodon fuckin' right because this is bullshit
@moira I think this section is managed by Seattle Parks. A buddy at Seattle Neighborhood Greenways did a walking audit of parts of the trail with someone from Parks. Let me know if you want a contact
@dgodon To my understanding, all of City of Seattle Burke-Gilman is managed by Seattle Parks. So... wouldn't hurt I guess? Because it sure seems to be a pattern.
@moira Jordan Hoy is the contact person, also listed at https://www.seattle.gov/parks/about-us/projects/burke-gilman-trail-repairs. I plan to contact them, but seems like the more the better.
@moira I sent an email and also asked on Seattle Cyclist discord if anyone else has encountered this issue.
@dgodon Yeh I dropped him a message too, with links to my photos and your report on Friday. We'll see what happens, I suppose!
