610: More Values in the Darkness

Who will be the last person in the world using Quicksilver? We'll give you one guess.

Accidental Tech Podcast: 610: More Values in the Darkness

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

@atpfm “If they announce perhaps the world’s fastest personal computer or something impressive like that, but that’s not what they’re announcing”

I thought we were expecting MacBook Pros with the newest, fastest chips, no?

😇

@alex Perhaps the fastest *laptop* chips…

@atpfm I wanna say Josh or Jones or Jonah or …

Oh, John.

@atpfm I still use Quicksilver even though it lost its ability to launch apps.

@atpfm @siracusa is so right on the “Apple remote touchpad sucks” thing.

Use case: F1TV app *requires* the use of the trackpad to swipe left to pull out the drawer that switches between audio feeds and lets you pick driver cams. I'm sure there are other such examples.

But with this infernal trackpad feature enabled, at least once every few weeks, clicking the center button in YouTubeTV (inevitably in the middle of a 3 hour long sportsball broadcast replay) causes the scrubber to skip unknown dozens of minutes or an hour into the future, and not only did you just get the future score spoiled for you, but you have ABSOLUTELY no idea how far back to go.

I think this might actually be a YTTV bug because I often find trying to drag the scrubber back, then clicking the button to play flat-out fails (keeps ending up 'skipped forward’), but regardless. It's a massive pain in the ass.

@atpfm @marcoarment your ideas about idyllic photos are taught in art school. Perhaps the most famous example is “Robert Adams - The New West”. You get a different record than you would from Ansel Adams, where everything is beautiful nature.

The open American West is nearly gone. The New West is a photographic essay about what came to fill it.

@atpfm Apple’s unwillingness to go hard on Vision Pro sales in store = IT’S A TEST CASE VERSION. Ie, a prototype they gain real world data/feedback while also recouping costs via Marco’s of the world donating $3.5k.
@atpfm any time I’m traveling and in an unfamiliar regional grocery chain that requires a loyalty number for best prices, I figure out the local area code for the store and use Jenny’s number — 867-5309 — someone has *almost* always registered it.

@atpfm still rocking my 9 year old Apple TV dev kit on the family TV (yes its only 1080p) and it works fine.

Have children though so we are on our 4th remote, all of which suck.

Re: TV Remote:

As we all know, all of these things are on the same legendary level: Mouse, multi-touch, Digital Crown, and the click wheel. And what’s sad, is that the utility of "spinning" on the TV remote is greatly hampered by not being able to say "I only want to use the touch functionality for click-wheelin'". 😔

(I ranted more about this earlier this year: https://havn.blog/2024/05/04/make-a-click.html)

Make a Click Wheel Mode for the Apple TV Already!

In this week’s episode of the excellent Hemispheric …

@atpfm re: histogram I think Nikon and Canon have the histogram flipped with regard as to whether black or white is on the left

@atpfm

Both the iPhone SE 4 and the iPad 11th-gen inspire a questions about high-end vs low-end speed bumps depending on Apple Intelligence and its affect on price points.

If the iPhone SE 4 is great, I don't see how the iPhone 14 could keep being sold; and either way, I have doubts about Apple's current iPhone SE 3 price point.

@atpfm Aren’t we all the IT Support for our parents? Whenever I do something for my dad/in-laws, I always make note of their passwords so that I a I have them when I’m need them.
@atpfm I appreciate the clarification about “expose to the right“ in photography, but it seemed like you still didn’t get into exactly why that is beneficial. John kind of hand-waved it, but my recollection is that the behavior of the sensor is non-linear such that there are many more values available in the brighter areas than in the darker areas. Therefore, having more of a picture in the brighter zone gives more precision for RGB values and thus more freedom to work with the image.
@DavidAnson The reason I didn’t get into it is because I found too many conflicting opinions and descriptions about this topic to know how to summarize it well. That’s why I mentioned the Wikipedia link and the YouTube video: longer descriptions with more detail than will fit in a single follow-up item.
@siracusa Haha. I missed the mention of Wikipedia/YouTube but maybe because I was in the car for that segment.

@atpfm

Just to clarify:

The USB-C EU rules don't kick-in until "new devices shipping after December 28th 2024", so nothing this fall HAS to be USB-C.

I'm assuming: new Macs that are released with keyboards in 2025 will need to have USB-C keyboard.

@atpfm Did you know dudes? You can sway the election!
@atpfm regarding the "fork in the road" for AppleTV: the latest AppleTV is actually WORSE for games, even if the chip is better on paper, since in practice it thermal throttles a lot earlier. This is according to an old colleague who is working on an Apple Arcade-title, absolute monkey's paw.
@atpfm Re: What streaming video-relevant hardware refresh could Apple do to Apple TV? They now have an AV1 decoder in the A series SoCs, so they could refresh to a SoC that has the AV1 decoder. @hsivonen @atpfm It's still a little slow. Stutters on soccer and basketball games. These are on a 7 second delay, so they don't show anything gruesome. Also, add “Find My" to the remote.
