I actually wasn’t on The WELL back in the day; I was over on talkers and MUDs and local BBS’s. The WELL cost money and long-distance calling…but I always *wanted* to be on there, so as an adult I went ahead and joined.

I could telnet around from about 1993, but I didn’t have any money until around 2000 (and the telnetting around in the early days was…uh…not entirely legal).
