People say the French are cowardly and unwilling to fight but during WWII Americans were overwhelmingly against fighting when Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland. When Paris fell in 1940, polling revealed that the US electorate was even less keen than at the start of the war to join the Allied cause.
@asymco
People who said that didn’t have their country decimated twice within 25 years. Easy to be critical when you’re sitting, safe at home.

@asymco
With military expenditure historically more than the next 10 nations combined, I believe it is probably for the best Americans are reluctant to sanction more wars of foreign adventure. Even with that, we’ve voluntarily jumped into Korea, Vietnam, Iraq a few times, Afghanistan, Grenada, etc. usually without much gratitude of the people living there, and justifiably so.

Do not tempt this bear.

@asymco fast forward to today, when republicans have found the one and only war they don’t want to supply bombs for…
@asymco But those oceans, who could cross those to hurt us? And Lindbergh telling us the Germans were building so many planes we could never catch up. Versus France with their incomplete Maginot Line, & their failure to enforce the Versailles Treaty that ended WW1. So many countries with their heads in the sand 🙁
@asymco You can always count on Americans to do the right thing – after they’ve tried everything else.
