No surprise — I agree very much with Cory Doctorow’s advice to use an RSS reader.

And, even though I write an RSS reader, I also agree wholeheartedly with this part:

“Don't worry about which RSS reader you start with. It literally doesn't matter.”

Just pick one! Based on anything. You can shop around, or not, later.

Pluralistic: You should be using an RSS reader (16 Oct 2024) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

@brentsimmons I've been a NetNewsWire advocate on the Apple side for many years. Free, open source, fast and accessible.

@brentsimmons The only thing I would add to this is pick an RSS reader that allows easy import/export so that your feeds are not held hostage.

Also, I prefer RSS readers that can run locally on my device offline and don't need some bogus online service to fetch my RSS, and sell my reading preferences to advertisers.

NetNewsWire is definitely fantastic.

@dandylyons @brentsimmons I don’t use an online service, but is it really fair to call them “bogus?” I think a lot of people rely on them for syncing read status better than they tend to get from iCloud.

@ehler @brentsimmons Bogus is definitely an opinionated stance of mine.

They have a place. I just think that syncing read status is a very weak value proposition for my tastes.

But some are better than others. Readwise Reader is an RSS reader that adds more value for example.

@brentsimmons anyone have a suggestion for a good android reader? every one I've tried sucks.
@brentsimmons personally I'm quite happy with newsboat on desktop, but I still haven't found a good mobile client to sync with.
@brentsimmons And of course @NetNewsWire works very well with @newsblur That’s what I’m happily using.
@brentsimmons “You can follow any Mastodon account […] via RSS.”
TIL, interesting. For all ‘I want all their updates’ accounts.
