What word(s) did I even use before “vibes”? This has absolutely scuppered my vocabulary.

@Graham_LRR
I think I used to use the 'get the feeling' or 'sense' route most of the time, with a few 'I'm not sure why, but I think that' thrown in.

Or you could go with Snow Crash, 'Condensing fact from the vapor of nuance'.

@Graham_LRR "Feels"?

@darkend @Graham_LRR Agreed, "feels" definitely had that usage in addition to the usage it retains.

Before that, though... things get hazier. I think _atmosphere_ in some cases but I'm not sure it was as generally used.

@Graham_LRR Feel, air, personality, look. Vibes honestly replaced a lot of words to bring it under one blanket term rather then having to use a bunch of words that were more specific to people, places, things, or a group there of.
@SeiichiSin @Graham_LRR the carcinisation of vibes, we call it.
@Graham_LRR zeitgeist works for the broader sense but that's not a normal everyday world

@Graham_LRR the word vibe is such a vibe tho. it's like, some sort of sensation. some sort of phenomenon. a feeling. an aspect. a characteristic. Big Mood. like an ambience. an aura. some sort of quality. an impression.

it's like some sort of vibe or w/e

@Graham_LRR energy? ambience? air? aura? I'm sure we had a lot of slightly-more-specialized words
@Graham_LRR Feelings? Emotions? Mood? Achieving synchronicity? Grooving?
@Graham_LRR I'm not sure but we can take it further
@Graham_LRR I think feel is the big one for me. Something doesn't feel right, something feels off, that feels sinister. Etc.
@Graham_LRR sometimes a word just comes along and works so damned well it time travels to replace the ones it replaced!
@Graham_LRR “energy” if you're a New Agey Boomer, “mood” if you're GenX
@Graham_LRR Chemistry or click/clicked when talking about certain meatbag centric interactions.
