Watch out for sparks, children

@cypnk I've gotta be that neurospicy nerd to "um ackshually" this, but even at low voltage electric current takes ALL available conductive paths. The one of least resistance or greatest conductivity carries the majority of current but ALL available conductive paths will carry~

Otherwise I love this meme. 😂

@dragonarchitect Of course! And let's not forget those annoying tin whiskers on solder that's got me a bunch of times over the years
@cypnk I've actually never encountered tin whiskers but I've cooked a few semiconductors here & there

@dragonarchitect @cypnk
When I was a kid, I once made a 7805 violently explode.

I had soldered wired to it that led to a power plug and then plugged it into 230V, just to see what would happen.

Explosions apparently.

@MeiLin @dragonarchitect That was delightful and terrifying to read!

@cypnk @dragonarchitect
That was terrifying to experience...

As for a different anecdote, one I had a length of solder, which I put into a plastic tube and then, just for the heck of it, put both ends into an outlet.

The solder melted inside the tube extremely quickly, making me go 'huh'.

And of course there are always the fun experiments in vocational school. Who can make an electrolytic cap explode and jump highest.

We released a lot of the magic smoke that makes electronics work.

@dragonarchitect @cypnk it's more like high voltage changes the resistance of things not intended to be nonlinear devices... It makes and destroys pathes as it sees fit. Some wires fail open, others turn into negative resistance arcs.
@cypnk Anything's a conductor if you just try harder and believe in yourself.
@cypnk yeah I remember first sitting at an accelerator control desk, clicking something and hearing a huge bang and both monitors going out

Me to engineer next to me "eh is that normal?"
"yeah just a spark, happens"
@cypnk This is unnecessarily polarizing. 😀
@cypnk why did you censor F*KING in the alt text 😭
@kimapr Personal preference
@cypnk it is best practice to avoid censoring alt text as the primary consumer of it — those with partial or total blindness — will hear distorted or incomprehensible speech from TTS screen readers.

I've been on Fedi on separate accounts since 2017 and it's one of the worst things about here Muted

@cypnk this is inaccurate. in the world of high voltage, everything is the wire
@cypnk Nice one. This low voltage-high voltage dualism almost makes me want to ask: what about “middle voltage”? 😅
