My son just got his first data breach letter. He’s 2.5 years old.

Really looking forward to explaining to my kid that his PII has been compromised for basically his entire life because he had the audacity to be born at a time when the positive incentives for computer security were nearly nonexistent and the regulatory penalties favored doing the bare minimum you can get away with.

@while1malloc0 Was it from Change Healthcare or HealthEquity? Got letters from both of them recently.

"What information may have been involved?"

"The affected data primarily consisted of sign-up information for accounts and benefits we administer."

* First name
* Last name
* Address
* Telephone number
* Employee ID
* Employer
* Social Security Number
* Health card number
* Health plan member number
* Dependent information (for general contact information only)
* Service type
* Diagnoses
* Prescription details
* Payment card information

Diagnoses? Prescription details? That "primarily" in the preceding sentence is doing some fucking LEGWORK I tell ya.

@while1malloc0 But thankfully, I'm a weirdo that broadcasts all of his medical ailments onto the internet for free. Silly hackers could've saved themselves some time.
@aspensmonster the former. The thing that really gets me is the SSN. Those other data points he either doesn’t have or are varying degrees of mutable. SSNs not so much.
@while1malloc0 Maybe one day we'll stop doing SSN-based authentication and adopt a proper national ID system.

@while1malloc0

Could you file charges under the Child Abuse statutes? :D

Ah, so that’s what happens when @lisamelton boosts your post.
@while1malloc0 One of my family members got one too. She's 19 months old 🤬
@PeasLuvnJustice it’s pretty ridiculous
@while1malloc0 Right?! We have to freeze credit for babies so criminals don't steal their identities. Unbelievable 🤬

@while1malloc0 one thing people may not be aware of, is you can now request a free credit report from the big three....every WEEK

Which tells you the state of things

@pixelpusher220 I wasn’t aware of the frequency increase, no. That’s useful, it not disheartening, information.

I feel like I’d be fired if I pushed that much of my responsibilities onto my users, or at least be considered very bad at my job.

You now have permanent access to free weekly credit reports

@pixelpusher220 @while1malloc0 When did it change from yearly to weekly? >.<

@while1malloc0 really disappointed by this cyberpunk dystopia
@while1malloc0 you always remember your first.
@while1malloc0 First one and he's only been alive 82 scaramuccis? Well done, system, well done.

@while1malloc0

Always good to see them hit those milestones.

@while1malloc0 😢 they start so young nowadays.
@while1malloc0 The new original sin is having your data entered into an insecure database at birth.
@while1malloc0 Did hackers break in to his Speak & Spell?
@while1malloc0 That must be a US thing. I've never got such a letter and surely not because of no data breach.
@http I guess? I’m not really familiar with the reporting policies in other countries. In any case it was a subprocessor in our famously awful healthcare system, so it certainly has a US flavor regardless of reporting mechanism.
@while1malloc0 it is horrible how that “Change Healthcare” breach is affecting pretty much everyone. And for those not affected yet, because they were born after the breach, it is just a matter of time until some healthcare outfit haemorrhages information again.
@while1malloc0 Re your son getting his first data breach letter at the age of 2.5 years. I believe that's AI for you. Or a human idiot. We'll soon never know the difference.
@while1malloc0 @dHeinemann the hospital bill for my second son’s delivery was sent addressed to him!
