Europe to End “Salary Secrecy”: Employee Salaries to Become Public by 2026 The law came into force in June 2023, but its implementation will be progressive depending on the number of employees in the company until June 2026. https://fikku.com/111920

@irene Unfortunately, it does nothing to prevent salaries from being leveled to their minimum.

And, of course, it does nothing to prevent men from getting higher positions and have "justified" higher salaries because of that.
> If I promote John and Jane I must pay them the same. But Jane did not really deserve that promotion, after all

And the risk is that the workers' bargaining power decreases when companies know exactly how much competitors are paying.

@irene And to clarify, that "I" in the that quote about John and Jane is *not* me, but an hypothetical asshole.
@gmazzap First of all, I can guarantee that companies already know exactly how much competitors are paying and it’s only employees in the dark. Obviously pay transparency doesn’t fix sexism and misogyny but it is an important step. A quick google search turned up dozens of well-researched articles for why this has been studied and is true: https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/08/gender-pay-gap-salary-transparency/
@irene All studies are very early, and no study about salary compression. My concerns come from the fact that I live in Italy, where official studies (https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/policies/justice-and-fundamental-rights/gender-equality/equal-pay/gender-pay-gap-situation-eu_it) found "explained pay gap" is *negative*. This is due to the established usage of nationwide collective agreements guided by unions. Still, the women's labor situation is terrible here. Occupation rate, illegal labor, % of women in leadership... So I'm skeptical solving gender gap on paper will have a real impact on society
