Victor GijsbersI'm flabbergasted by French politics. Am I to understand that Macron is making an unofficial alliance with Le Pen because he somehow hates the left more than the fascists? Is that what's going on?

@victorgijsbers It's similar tho what happens in Germany with the CDU. They also think the Left is much more dangerous for their money than the fascists.
clairikine@victorgijsbers there’s that, and the political and media landscape is not helping, but I honestly think the simplest explanation is that he’s on an egotistical power trip and all his decisionmaking comes from there. Including thinking that he can make a deal with them and come out unscathed. Same reason he dissolved parliament

Which subsequently drove lots of mid-right voters (VVD) to the far right, (PVV), because the support of the mid-right legitimized the far-right as socially acceptable. In the recent elections, VVD lost big time and now we have a far-right governing coalition.
