Operating system internals aren't nearly as bloody as you might, despite what's in the table of contents.

@sjvn It seemed funny at the time. Neither ewt nor I had kids then. 😬

But maybe our kids are old enough to find this funny, and not yet old enough to find it cringe? 🤔

@sjvn what book is it?
@mindaslab It's from the second edition of Eric Troan and Mike Johnson's Linux Application Development. It's dated now, but back in its day, 2004, it was essential reading for Linux developers.
Reminds me of this panic from a few years ago...

@sjvn I miss the chapters about reaping, zombies and killing all your offsprings at once.
@sjvn dumping Core is usually known as defecation
@sjvn @isotopp I‘m overhearing a conversation between colleagues right now where they are discussing WAR files and killing sessions. IT is brutal 🙉

@sjvn

Is "dumping core" the same as vomiting?

🤮🤮🤮

@sjvn

"Don't worry, the kernel child reaper only kills orphans."

@sjvn #alt4you Photo of the table of contents of a book:

9.4 Process Primitives
9.4.1 Having Children
9.4.2 Watching Your Children Die
9.4.3 Running New Programs
9.4.4 A Bit of History: `vfork()`
9.4.5 Killing Yourself
9.4.6 Killing Others
9.4.7 Dumping Core

@sjvn reminded me that once I tried to type “man kill” in my terminal, but ended up typing it in my browser… Definitely NOT the instructions I’m not looking for
