I have a “songs with stories” playlist, but man, it’s bleak. I basically can’t listen to it. Anyway - hit me up with your “songs with stories” suggestions! #SongsWithStories #music #playlists
@domino_joyce I’ve been through several hundred albums(yes actual CDs) and can confirm that there is no story track in all of popular music that isn’t a bit bleak, not one! I’ve also now got dozens of albums needing my attention
@davelunt @domino_joyce I feel I have to counter that Sk8er Boi by Avril Lavigne qualifies as a story track (including 4th wall busting conclusion) and is certified not bleak.
@steveroyle Good! But I think @domino_joyce needs to publish the rule book. I found some examples I rejected as autobiography not story. Are we allowed upbeat cheerful tunes with bleak lyrics nobody notices? What if some people suffer in the story, but they are bad people? I really hope there are very detailed rules and an appeals process!

@davelunt @domino_joyce ha ha! Yes we need to know the parameters here. To me, a story track must have a full story arc, otherwise it’s just a song about a situation.

BTW, music blogger The New Vinyl Villain has a long running series on “Some Songs are Great Short Stories”.

@steveroyle @davelunt I have been hoist by my own pertard here because I have previously rejected skater boy from another persons’s submission with the feedback “plain story arcs of requited love are not enough for a pass at this level”. So do give me your bleak submissions too. You are right to reject autobiography though. (It turns out the best stories are a little bit bleak) #SongsWithStories

@CellySally @steveroyle @davelunt In the absence of a formal mark scheme, I can offer the following as exemplary:

Andy Shauf - Jerry was a Clerk
Dave - Lesley (strap in for that one)
The Violent Femmes - Country Death Song
