I get excited whenever the carbon intensity of the UK electricity grid is below ~100g of CO2 per kilowatt hour of electricity.

The 2023 average was 162g gCO2/kWh

But just look at this figure - in 2009 it was regularly ~600. We ARE making big changes. Hooray!

As the UK closes in on its legally-binding 2050 emissions reduction targets, it’ll be more important than ever to understand how green our electricity is and the impact of any action we, as GB’s Electricity System Operator, take to keep electricity flowing. We’ve created a dashboard that shows, in real time, the carbon intensity of the system and our balancing actions as well as the current generation mix. It’s an exciting development, providing unprecedented transparency around and insight into our actions – and how close we’re getting to zero carbon operation.

@helenczerski the UK is making great progress. I'm in France where emissions are already much lower in electricity generation. As low as 11 g CO2eq/kWh
@helenczerski Scotland gets wind up to level bonkers. Wind turbines are pretty rad.

@helenczerski
That’s interesting and encouraging! I just looked up British Columbia and saw that our net intensity has routinely been below 100 tCO2-e/GWh because of our heavy reliance on hydro power (which is basically the same as 100 gCO2/kWh, unless I’m missing something). And recently we’re below 10! 💪🏼

Electricity emission intensity factors for grid-connected entities - Province of British Columbia

Electricity in B.C. is supplied through the integrated grid, the Fort Nelson grid, and through community generating stations for isolated grid communities. Each has different GHG emission intensity factors for reporting.

@helenczerski US data is at https://www.epa.gov/egrid/power-profiler#/ but one has to convert units, I think its ~ .45 g/kWh per lbs/MWh so my region is around 300 g/kWh (2022 data)

@helenczerski 2015 was some year. Did a huge wind farm come online?
@andrewg I think there was a big decision by the government in about 2010 to invest in/push wind farms in the North Sea. 2015 is when it all started coming online.

@helenczerski

Nice to see some things are going in the right direction!

You don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon. All links count as 23 characters towards your posts's maximum size, no matter how long the link really is. By avoiding link shorteners, you are also protecting people's privacy and reducing the risk of link rot. (There is a bug on the official iPhone/iPad app that means links are counted as their true length instead of 23, which is yet another reason to switch to a third party app such as Ice Cubes or Mona or Ivory.) #FediTips
