Re LB: Oof, that sentence "the market for written tech journalism is not what it once was – nor will it ever be again", in my mind the emphasis is on "written" there, which makes me sad. Video, video, video all the time is just so inefficient with my time, give me a skimmable written article any day of the week. But I guess at least video is harder for the LLMs to steal? This timeline sucks.
@sinbad With video we just get crappy AI transcriptions full of typos and misheard words 😩
@sinbad I would think the reason why videos are so popular is because of the fact you can listen to it while doing something else. Like podcast consumption.
And now that every service out there try to monetize/optimize for this kind of content, text gets less visibility. It's a vicious circle. :/
@froyok I must admit I don’t really “get” multitasking. I can’t possibly split my attention between 2 things if at least one of them is non-trivial. I can understand listening to entertainment podcasts while doing chores or something, but I can’t have a technical video on while I’m doing anything else, my brain just can’t absorb any of it
@sinbad I feel it depends on the task itself. Coding for sure I can't, but when walking/running or drawing/sculpting I can easily have stuff on the side. Even helps creative tasks because you don't think about them, you just "do". 😄
@froyok for me both the things need to not require much concentration, otherwise I get no benefit from / make no progress on either. Which pretty much limits it to combinations of things I can do on autopilot which has no overlap with any technical domain (but they’re still pivoting all of them to video). Perhaps I’m just unusually prone to distractions and I didn’t realise until people stopped writing stuff down
