"Bicycles let people move with greater speed without taking up significant amounts of scarce space, energy, or time...Cyclists become masters of their own movements without blocking those of their fellows."
@straphanger I visited Vietnam a few years ago, the first time I was in Vietnam was in 1973. Mostly bicycles on the roads back then. In the 21st Century? I saw ONE bicycle the entire week I was there. What were people using for transportation? Moped type motor scooters. hundreds of them in every neighborhood. You can go farther for work on a motor scooter. You get there quicker. In Vietnam, at least, Bicycles were not the future. Neither were Automobiles, Scooters!
@djohnson53 @straphanger If they are electric then yes they are what I would like to see in the future. ICE scooters are really noisy.

@enkiusz @straphanger I saw two electric scooters. But, to be fair, that's new tech, so they are in an early adoption phase.

My point is that working class folks, while understanding all of our environmental concerns, have additional, more pressing concerns. "I need to get to work and not be sweating like a pig after riding my bike for an hour one way." This is what happened in Vietnam. People, normal people, need to get to work, and bicycles only suffice for a select few.
