Them: “You’re not trans, why are you always defending them?”

Me: “I am also not a domestic cat, and if I see you abusing one of those I’ll kick your ass too.”

@mos_8502

“Why do you care about people who aren’t you?”

=

“What is the value of community?”

@MxVerda Remember that British politician who popularised saying that community didn't exist?

@mos_8502

@riley @MxVerda @mos_8502 She did bring people together... her grave is the most popular public urinal in the country...

@chloeraccoon It's strange they're not charging a pee-fee at her grave, really.

@MxVerda @mos_8502

@riley @MxVerda @mos_8502 come on, the tories have made enough taking the piss for over a decade from the entire population...

@chloeraccoon Ah, yes, the HiPiFi, high fee for being pissed upon.

@MxVerda @mos_8502

@mos_8502 that’s why we have this problem in the first place. Missing empathy and only caring about yourself. If they cared about others no one would have to defend trans people.

@mos_8502

Almost like there may be a whole ass poem about standing up for vulnerable people because you need to speak up in advance, or else.

@mos_8502 EXACTLY THAT IS LITERALLY THE POINT!

@mos_8502

What kind of a dumbass would even ask such a stupid fucking question?

@mos_8502

Plus, just because it's not happening to you yet....

@mos_8502
I mean, by context I know this wasn’t your intent so please don’t take this as an attack, but it’s hard for me to see this and not trip over the analogy comparing me to an animal.

How about a simpler retort:

“Because trans people are human beings worthy of dignity and respect”

@knbrindle @mos_8502 Visual imagery is a feature of metaphor, not a bug, you can't replace it with an abstraction and claim that it serves the same purpose. Richard the Lionheart was also compared to an animal but I don't think he ever complained.
@knbrindle @mos_8502 There's a definite tendency for certain kinds of people to care more about animals than other people, yeah
@flippac @knbrindle @mos_8502 to quote a friend of mine, "humans have done nothing but abuse, traumatize, and rape me -- cats are super chill though"
@mos_8502 or: "why are you attacking them?"
@mos_8502 as a not-domestic cat i thank you
@mos_8502 We're not free until everyone is free.
@mos_8502 Because we are ALL human. It’s none of my business or yours.

@mos_8502

The ones that silently label you a "chaser" are worse.

(Not that they don't exist, but FFS, they don't usually announce themselves!)

@mos_8502 People who are going after trans people today have a whole list of people they want to go after next - and you and I are on that list, and earlier than we imagine. That's an argument I've used with fellow atheists.
@Mazurek64 @mos_8502 “Look at how they treat the most vulnerable. That’s how they’d treat you if they could get away with it.”
@mos_8502 and the other thing is the ones attacking trans people probably won't stop there if they get away with it.
@mos_8502 I’m also not a trade unionist, or a communist, or a Jew.

@mos_8502 It's amazing that people can think like that. Even if they don't understand the concept of intrinsic rights, have they never heard "do unto others" or "first they came"?

I wonder how many people ask that question in good faith, vs. just not wanting to have their own awfulness highlighted. It could also be read as a deliberate "divide and conquer" tactic, or even an implied threat.

@mos_8502 Having 'Faggot!' screamed at straight me twice daily for five school-years (mid- to late-1970sC.E.) could only be expected to either make me homophobic or intensely sympathetic to gay rights.

I'd say that being all-to-human it did both. I _think_—but I know I'm biassed—that it's like 5/95.

(A funny story: I had just decided that this was just their not-really–sex-related epithet for my sports-hating/learning-loving combo…when they started soliciting sex.)

@mos_8502 Many people like to use the "they came for someone else but not me yet" response, but I object to that as well. I'm not defending someone just because I might be in danger further down the road. It might be a case where I'm *never* in danger from a particular situation, but I'm defending someone because it's the right thing to do, because they don't deserve to be picked on or harassed or threatened.

@cstephens2

Exactly. It comes down to the type of society we prefer to live in.

@mos_8502

@mos_8502 I'm also not a dog, but if I see people abusing one, I'll make sure they're arrested and charged for it.

@mos_8502 Heck I'm allergic to cats and would still do that. What's wrong with people.

Them: “You’re not trans, wh...?”

Me: “Or am I?... 🤔”

@mos_8502 except in real life cis people don't give a shit and these 'allies' are almost always eggs
@mos_8502 @Steampunk_Prof Your ally ship is so important and has such broad impact. As the parent of a trans child I am constantly terrified my child will be hurt. It never goes away. It’s a fear made only worse knowing your child has a continued struggle with so much in life. And we live in a very safe and supportive community. My heart goes out to those m who have less support. Knowing there are defenders that are vocal and strong is comforting. (1/2)
Thank you for your steadfast kindness to others. Peace. (2/2)
