When I once compared Israel to Nazis, I got bollocked, as, apparently I am anti-Semitic, I know shit about Nazis and I never been to Israel.

Now, a Jewish Israeli historian who specialises in Nazis says the same.

I wonder what would be arguments against him: https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/aug/13/israel-gaza-historian-omer-bartov

As a former IDF soldier and historian of genocide, I was deeply disturbed by my recent visit to Israel

"Most vividly, I remember patrolling the shadeless, silent streets of the Egyptian town of ʿArīsh – which was then occupied by Israel – pierced by the gazes of the fearful, resentful population observing us from their shuttered windows. For the first time, I understood what it meant to occupy another people."

The Oct 7 attacks by Hamas violated human rights, and as with Israel's counter-attacks, we must not let "self defence" be used as an excuse for such actions.

But apologetics for the IDF's genocidal campaign in Gaza relies on the notion that the Oct 7 were unprovoked. Nobody who has even a passing familiarity with the history of the state of Israeli can take that notion seriously.

When a child lashes out in blind rage, against someone who has been viciously bullying them for years, the bully will often claim the attack was unprovoked. We can't understand who is bullying whom, without some understanding of the history of their relationship.
