Climate deniers say that climate change is a hoax because they heard that acid rain was a problem and nothing ever came of it.

We literally had a major government program to fix the problem!

@davidho acid rain is a weird thing to deny because you can go to the centre of any major city on Earth and look closely at the older buildings and see for yourself how the stonework is eroded.
@davidho so by the same reasoning relativity is a hoax because Einstein didn't like quantum theory???
@davidho Same with the ozone hole

@davidho

There's the problem with fixing things. Seen it happen with the ozone layer depletion and with Y2K. When things go according to plan we end up breeding denialism.

@angelastella @davidho We need to go back in time and sabotage the Y2K effort to save humanity from climate disaster.

@jgordon @davidho

Yeah, we need to make these programmers go all John Galt on the banks and airlines.

(That was sarcasm.)

@davidho Just like Y2K. So much fuss and yet nothing happened!!! 🙈
@davidho the lakes died first. But they were mostly in Canada (including on my childhood farm) so I guess that's the same as something not happening
@davidho just ask any IT professional in the 90’s about their Y2K projects….
@davidho It's literally the reason the US EPA was created. Republican-voting sport fishers were losing their lakes and forced Nixon to do something about it.
@davidho Never underestimate the average intelligence of human beings. Also, keep in mind that approximately have of all humans are even dumber than that.

@davidho
Sadly we've gone from "low information voters" to "wrong information voters."

It's like we are living in " dumb and dumber. "

@davidho

Same deal with Ozone hole.

The problem was growing, but international effort changed the spray can propellant from CFCs to less nasty gases.

@davidho I heard the same reasoning with Y2K. I was fking there and fixed those darn "19"+table.field parts in lots of code.

@davidho

And also because humanity was able to fix the hole in the ozone layer through international cooperation so the same will happen before things get really bad.

@davidho Well, we put scrubbers into smokestacks, and we are still dropping chalk (i.e. mostly Calcium carbonate) into forests by helicopter on this side of the pond to keep soil acidity under control...

@davidho
Since it’s an article of faith that government action can’t solve things, when such action does solve things either the thing wasn’t happening _OR_ the government action delayed the solution.

I’ve seen similar arguments about the clean air act, where the photographs of how bad it was as opposed to now is proof of how corporations solved the problem despite government interference.

@davidho Yeah, that and "the hole in the ozone layer". I like to respond with "great example of how politicians listening to scientists can actually fix a global problem" and then tell them about the Montreal Protocol
