WHO Director-General declares mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has determined that the upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries in Africa constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR).

The risk to the general public in the US from clade I mpox circulating in the DRC “is very low, and there are no known cases in the United States at this time. Due to efforts over the last nine months, the United States is well prepared to rapidly detect, contain, and manage clade I cases should they be identified domestically. The United States has a robust surveillance system in place, including through clinical testing and wastewater analysis.” - HHS
@w7voa in Toronto there's been a big uptick and Public Health is urging people to get vaccinated immediately.

Meanwhile:

"IT'S OFFICIAL: The mask ban in Nassau County, NY is now law and takes effect immediately.

It gives police the power to fine people wearing a mask $1,000 and sentence them to jail time.

While the bill includes health and religious exceptions, the broad language means anyone wearing a mask could be arrested."

@w7voa What are the criteria for a global health emergency?
