In the last Polish town, just before the border with Lithuania, someone told us, "Those over there don't have paved roads, there are only impassable gravel paths." With saying that, he looked at us with pity on his face. Soon after, when we passed the border sign, we initially laughed at the words from the Polish guy. But then the initially well-drivable gravel road got worse and worse, becoming sandier and incredibly difficult to ride. Was the guy really right? We decided to leave the EuroVelo and hit the road instead. Thus turned out to be a perfectly normal asphalted road and made our journey a bit more pleasant again. In Marijampolė, we camped in a lovely birch forest right by a reed-fringed lake. The next morning, we took the train to Šiauliai, in the northern part of the country.
In Šiauliai we pedaled through the quite nice little city to the park at the border of a lake. There it had toilets and even a shower (with hot water) to use for free. What a luxury! We stayed there for two days and decided about our next steps...
