going to drown everyone on the phantom dust subreddit in a swamp because i'm trying to troubleshoot something with this game and every. fucking. thread. where someone is asking about this the answer is just "join our discord and ask there!"

eat absolute shit, fuck you

the world wont' get better unless we start screaming at people for doing this
Listen I don't like reddit, but at least if I find someone with the same problem as me on reddit and the solution is there then I don't have to ask. If you make people join a discord this is why you get discords where people ask the same question every two seconds.
Stop hiding all your fucking information in discords
@lori discord community managers speedrunning “oh wait this is why people invented published faqs and then discovered content strategy”
@danhon it's absolutely incredible like you will join a discord to ask a question they told you to ask in their discord then they'll yell at you for not searching the discord even though searching discords is a fucking nightmare
@lori even the good subreddits figured out they should write shit down and make it easily findable

@lori @danhon I am constantly waffling between "well reddit steals our info and also I don't care to be on the google index as a service to you" and "discord is a slowly descending hellscape of bad UX, hidden abuse and they ALSO steal your data for AI".

It's truly sad we cannot have nice things.

@Elucidating @lori @danhon because we originally left usenet for the "convenience" of the web
@kwramm @lori @danhon I am definitely not on "team Usenet" that experience was miserable in basically every dimension. Had they continued to be a primary form of exchange they would have injected ad streams as well, I'm sure.

@Elucidating @danhon basically the killer feature of reddit is that if I search for a problem I can find a reddit thread of someone with that problem eight years ago. If the only answer is join a discord I have to hope that discord link still works, I have to hope that discord even still exists, and I have to attempt to find my problem sifting through who knows how many years of casual chitchat with one of the worst search functions ever. Or I have to ask people my question and hope I don't get yelled at because they've spent eight years answering this same question over and over.

And every single other person with this problem has to do this.

@lori @danhon first of all: phantom dust? Sick! 🤘

Second: fighting games are in shambles because of this. We used to have gamefaqs, which was *fine*, then a huge upgrade to community wikis like vfdc or srk. Now we've regressed to a constellation of competing sites, mobile apps, unlisted google docs, and unsearchable discord posts.

People are making *character-specific* discords and spreading game information across dozens of silos per game 🤦

@templewulf @danhon phantom dust is sick but we never managed to get multiplayer working last night 🙃 I have no idea why a game Microsoft still sells in app purchases for is this hard to get working. And I found so many threads of people with our same problems where the only reply was "join this discord"

@lori @danhon Huh, I've never joined discord so I didn't know that the search is rubbish or that they yell at you for not using that search.

Seems like my usual attitude of "No, I'm not joining discord, I'll just find some other project that is actually really open then" is the right one.

@pre @danhon discords search is a nightmare because like...it will try to match similar words, but it's idea of similar words is bonkers. Can't think of a real life example right now but it'd be like if you say "oh I remember someone here talking about cartoons, I'll search the word cartoon" and discord will go "heres also every instance of someone using the word car"
@lori @pre while at the same time not giving results for "cartoons" plural!

@lori @danhon

You can search discords?

@hlangeveld @danhon you can but the search is incredibly bad and only sortable by new to old or old to new. You don't get any kind of "most relevant" and it only searches individual messages. It also searches similar words to what you type, but its idea of similar is absolutely bonkers and you can't force it to only search for what you typed. Like if I wanted to search for Bois (like Jon Bois), it searches also for boys. But even worse, if you search for "definition", it thinks "definitely" is close enough and adds that in.

@lori @danhon

I use it, mostly for *updates* on games I play, and to keep in touch with some friends.

@danhon @lori if only they were that self-aware

@danhon @lori

"Congratulations, you've reverse engineered the USENET noob problem from 1990."

@danhon @lori I'm in a situation where people create a WhatsApp group by city. Mostly to announce events.
The shit is so fragmented that they created a new WhatsApp group in one of those groups so they can create one big message that regroups all the groups links.
And they put it in a pinned message. Except, people who join later in this group can't see the pinned message, and so the admin republish a new pinned message every week.

I understand where they come from, but it drives me mad.
@danhon @lori It's gotten so bad to the point where I hesitate to use a tool if the primary way of knowledge sharing for that tool is a discord server.

Not only is searching for information in discord a
horrible experience, but the general demographic of discord users is.... unpalatable sometimes, to say the least. :<
@axel @lori oh totally I was super interested in Scrypted but its whole thing is on Discord :(
@danhon @lori nope. Instead I watch them instead make a bot that will post answers to frequent questions when a mod or experienced person issues the right keyword command, like an automated copy-paste system. But it does only one question at a time if you know the keyword... If only there was a format that allowed users to search and skim questions and answers themselves.

@lori

There is no information in discords.
There are ephemeral conversations in discords.

Information resides in documentation:
README,
FAQs,
man pages,
documentation websites,
blogs even.

If your project isn't good enough to write authoritative documentation on using it, it's not good enough for anyone to use.

@lori this appeared in my feed without context and yes, just fucking yes
(and i don't say that just because I can't use discord until I get my broken computer fixed replaced)
@lori I would rather sign up for some phpbb forum with a fake email than use discord. How did they make IRC worse?
@lori
... and reddit
@Theriac I don't love reddit but at least on reddit you can find a ten year old thread of someone with your problem. And when you're talking about something that isn't your own project (in my case it was getting a game working) people are less likely to want to self host a website or forum for it. I can live with reddit for this.

@Theriac like my problem is someone is asking my exact question on reddit, and instead of answering them on reddit, people are telling them to go to their discord to get answers

I found six or seven threads with my exact problem where every answer was join this discord

@lori
reddit has started paywalling subreddits, this is the logical extension of dissuading external ways of accessing reddit content via programming apis and public floatation.

It will become as inaccessible as Discord imo.

@Theriac I'm not encouraging reddit use.

The real issue is that someone who is already on reddit, asking their question on reddit, is being redirected to a discord that we already know isn't easily publicly viewable instead of just answering it. If reddit becomes paywalled (which frankly I think will just kill it) then we can deal with that but right now people are diverting people from reddit to a place that's already in that position for no good reason.

@lori For the longest time I couldn't figure out the point of forums and threads on Discord because trying to find anything is like throwing open all your drawers to find a specific screw or cable.

Then I realised they wanted to capture and lock in forum users:

https://brologue.net/2024/04/11/enscattification/

Nearly every fan game or ROM hack project these days are on Discord; those guilds contain the only canonical download source.

Take a shot every time you see 'Join our Discord server:'

Discord’s Enshittification – Brologue

@lori I was going to do a post about Pokémom Emerald Rogue and how this is a welcome exception:

https://www.pokecommunity.com/threads/pokemon-emerald-rogue.479406/

Then I found out, surprise surprise, ALL of the documentation provided by the community (guides, etc.) are in GDocs links.

GDocs links whose only canonical source is their fucking Discord guild.

This is so, so, 𝘴𝘰 painfully egregious, and it's *not* out of malice... but my god, please mirror your links SOMEWHERE, ANYWHERE public.

(I am going to try and be the change I wish to see)
@lori yeah like sorry no I'm tired of having discord servers I used only once pilling up
@lori the only use case for Discord I support is organizing and running your remote TTRPG sessions.
@lori advertisers agree
@lori stop the tech bros from scraping my information on the clearnet to train ai, and also stop them from ruining places like reddit and I might...
@Pibble you're right to distrust the rest of the internet but very wrong to trust discord
@lori oh, I don't, my shit is both there and in .txt's im happy to send to people if they need it :)
@lori Members only forum where you can only register by answering my riddles three it is then! (:
@lori if i wanna use a thing and their "docs" are only on discord, i'll find something else
@lori if their only community is on discord (no forums, foss IM, etc), i'm also about 50% likely to just forget about using it
@lori welcome to 50+ servers 😬
