“I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris.”
- 99-year-old Jimmy Carter

He's been in hospice for over a year and wants to live long enough to vote for Kamala Harris. What's your excuse for not voting? #VoteBlue

Jimmy Carter says he's hoping to vote for Kamala Harris as 100th birthday approaches

Former President Jimmy Carter, 99, tells family he's holding on to vote for Kamala Harris for president

USA TODAY
@augieray

Dude's been fairly hardcore most of his life. Sadly, being less than 10yo throughout his presidency, I didn't learn about any of it till he'd been 2+ decades out of office.
@augieray He may not have been the greatest US president but he's certainly been the t greatest former president.

@mikewaghorne @augieray He was a great president. Republicans have spent millions trying to rewrite history and paint Reagan as some wonderful president and Carter as awful.

But the reverse is true. Reaganonics destroyed the middle class and the Reagan administration was corrupt AF (death squads in Latin America, Iran-Contra, union busting, etc.) Over 200 individuals from the Reagan administration came under either ethical or criminal investigation

@augieray I am foreign and not allowed.
@camilla_hoel I think one might have assumed my question was oriented to US voters, but if you need absolution for not voting, consider it granted.
@augieray It is more the frustration of wanting so very much to vote. To contribute to fundraising. Because it will affect us so very much of this goes sideways.
@augieray Not going to lie my house got really dusty while I was reading this.

@augieray

My grandpa is more than 100 years old and he likes to vote for Trump. And that's merely his personal decision, not yours or mine.
Even Trump is not great, he is still better than Harris.

@augieray @mmynatt You mean that Carter isn’t her VP pick?
@augieray
When then Lt. Carter was in the Navy, he saved a Canadian nuclear reactor after a meltdown. Apparently, he was exposed to radiation. It seems that he may have been changed into a superhero at that time and secretly joined the Avengers. No one knows if he can die. But, he is definitely a hero to many.

@augieray

He was behind including China into the UN and thus kick Taiwan out. Not a good move!

@augieray Well they all say "If you're an ally, don't vote for anyone that hurts your friends" so as someone with Palestinian friends, who could I vote for?
@thriveth Vote for the party that doesn't want to green light Israel using nuclear weapons in Gaza. Or, read Project 2025 and decide if that's what you want to unleash on the world. https://newrepublic.com/post/181580/republican-congressman-greg-murphy-nuke-gaza
Republican Congressman Joins Lindsey Graham in Calls to Nuke Gaza

“Nuke Gaza” is quickly becoming the new normal for the GOP.

The New Republic
@augieray "Yes, she commits genocide, but you should vote for her because the alternative is worse" is not a very convincing sell.

@thriveth Trump will destroy democracy, glass Muslim nations, ban abortion, weaponize the Justice system, and harm millions. Is that a better sell?

There is no comparison between the two. You can be disappointed about the Biden administration's stance on Gaza--I am, too!--but I'm also not a giant moron unable to see the Milky Way-sized gap between the two candidates or the tremendous danger to the world posed by Trump.

I don't know why any sane person needs to be "sold" in the first place.

@augieray I didn't say Trump was a better sell. My whole point was that none of the candidates are acceptable. Voting for degrees of genocide is not a real choice.

@thriveth News flash: There are issues other than Israel/Gaza. You can vote for the world, or you can abstain and see how much damage another Trump administration can do.

Seriously, do you not understand the stakes?

I won't engage further, since I only engage with people who see the big picture and not people whose narrow world view leads them to think it doesn't matter who wins in November.

@augieray And maybe you don't see any need to be "sold" in the first place, but here's the thing: In a representative democracy, politicians need to give voters something to vote for, or they don't get people's vote. That is literally the only way voters have of wielding their ostensibly supreme power. And "somewhat less terrible fascism" is not a real choice.
@augieray Oh! wow! I hope it happens.
@augieray Hope he get well enough that he can get back to building houses.
@talpa It's a nice thought, but he's in a hospice. His days of working on homes are over.
@augieray Now THAT is a patriot right to the end!
