We’re committed to helping people find their place in the Fediverse and wider Social Web.

We’ve helped hundreds of people, across multiple platforms, understand the idea by stripping down the tech and reimagining it.

We’ve put that learning in a video. It won’t answer all the questions, but it’s a strong starting point to help explain the Fediverse to outsiders.

Please share it to help educate others.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Whilst we explored open-source and federated alternatives to YouTube, we couldn’t find the right fit. We made the decision to publish on YouTube as it is widely known and understood by our partners and intended audience. To explain the Fediverse to outsiders, we need the process to be as simple as possible.
@newsmast publishing it on YouTube is perfectly understandable, since the purpose is to reach people that are not already on the Fediverse.
However, having it mirrored on the Fediverse for use by people there would also be nice.
Could you let us know what problems you encountered with the platforms you explored?
I think having your own PeerTube instance would make sense but you could also ask [email protected] whether they could host an account for you in the meantime?

@tfardet

Glad you understand our aim here!

We looked into PeerTube and agree, hosting an instance is something we want to put on our roadmap (especially as we hope to develop more video content in future 🤞 ). But, at the moment we don't have the time or resources to spread this far. Hopefully soon!

@newsmast genuinely curious, what's wrong with posting it on PeerTube? Though I suppose people not being able to comment easily could be a problem but it would also mean people get a taste right away (for better or worse).
I suggest posting on both in general but ofc you can only really promote one.

@norbipeti

To be honest, we just couldn't find an instance that was the right match and we don't have the time or resources to host our own at the minute (hopefully soon though!).

As you mentioned, it's also a lot easier for us as a small team to manage just a single video channel. So it makes sense for us to use the channel which is most familiar to our prospective audience!

@newsmast It's disappointing that this YouTube clip is completely inaccessible to blind people like me. It's just music. No narration, no description. Not really in keeping with the inclusivity we've been trying to build here on the Fediverse.
