In 1921, Banting, a Canadian physician, and Best, a medical student at the time, isolated insulin from the pancreas, providing a way to regulate blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. This discovery has saved millions of lives and transformed diabetes from a fatal disease into a manageable condition. Banting was later awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1923, sharing it with John Macleod, under whose supervision the research was conducted.
