I was talking to a dear friend of mine in her 80s when the Biden news came in. She’s a Dem but had been wavering on voting at all, disgusted by the last few months

She instantly snapped “Well don’t expect me to vote now.”

I stared at her & nearly started crying. I begged: “You HAVE to. It’s so important. If not for you, for me, for us. For my sweet kid who doesn’t know people can be hated for who they are yet.”

She went pale. “Ok ok you’re right. I will. I promise.”

Talk to people. Everyone.

@Catvalente Also give people a little time to grieve — not even joking

Many people voted for Joe Biden and were volunteering, donating, or otherwise emotionally invested in his campaign

I’m not a Biden fan at all, but I was backing him simply b/c I thought he had the best chance to win (I still do). Now we all need to unite behind Harris, but it might take Biden fans a little time to accept that

@peterbutler @Catvalente
I see a refusal to vote because Biden left as disrespecting or dishonoring his decision. He may have been bullied into it, yet he still decided to remove himself..
@Catvalente
This is what getting out the vote looks like. The internet is a good place to raise awareness, but when it comes to political activism, the real shit gets done offline.
@Catvalente why would this change actually deter someone. I can't understand.
@capnthommo because she’s the same age as Biden and feels he was pushed out
@Catvalente ah. But nevertheless... I mean I've not always agreed with the choice of leader but still.

@capnthommo @Catvalente

The decision that most people understand is consumer buying decisions. It's what they understand and practice daily.

So they tend to act like the candidates are two movies playing at the same multiplex. They think that if both movies look bad, and they refuse to go to either, then the movie studios will both panic and go oh no! We'll have to try harder to get people's interest, neither of these movies are good enough!

They think they can boycott the political process, basically. But this isn't a consumer buying decision.

The reality is closer to if you decide to skip both movies, then the movie you thought looked like the worst one gets your ticket money right from your account. One of the two flicks gets your money, like it or not, you only get to decide which one.

That inability to understand that this isn't a consumer buying decision makes them do weird things that don't make sense.

@jcschue @capnthommo @Catvalente We have to stop referring to ourselves as consumers. We’re citizens.
@jcschue @capnthommo @Catvalente Another good analogy is treatment for an illness – you make a choice among unpleasant options based on what will do the most good.

@jcschue @capnthommo @Catvalente

To offer a perspective from the non-voter, neither I nor anyone else I know in the principled non-voting community is unaware of the way the electoral process works.

But there's a concept talked about during the Cold War concerning how one of the particular indignities of authoritarianism was being forced to participate in your own degradation. Repeat the propaganda. Believe the Official Truth. Engage in the ritual mechanisms of the regime. Etc.

@jcschue @capnthommo @Catvalente

What you're looking at is a variation on that.

We _know_ we're gonna get fucked either way.

But we can at least spare ourselves the ritual humiliation of _asking_ for it.

@jcschue @capnthommo @Catvalente

Politics is not marriage.

You don't have to love the candidate you vote for.

Politics is public transportation.

If you don't vote, you are allowing those who DO vote to choose where you are going.

Vote.

If no candidate is going to your exact destination (as is often the case), vote for the candidate who gets you closest to where you want to go.

@capnthommo @Catvalente Because the change is the move of the petty drama-making media corporations, their pundit pawns, and weakthy donor class/celebrities who literally live in castles to invalidate the already-made decision of thousands of people who voted for Biden. Their(our) choice was taken away for the sake of the media and donor interests. Yes, support Harris…but also yes, be aware of how the people’s choice has been disregarded, disrespected, and displaced.

@Catvalente
I had that exact conversation with a friend/co-worker an hour ago with a not-a-big Biden fan, doesn't like Harris. We are in South Florida BTW.

"You have 3 choices:
1) Vote for Trump
2) Don't Vote = Vote for Trump
3) Vote for Harris
Simple as that."

@Catvalente @lisamelton My 91-yo mom voted Trump. She recently told me she regretted it and would never vote for that "horrible man" again.
Everything is possible...
@Catvalente Was her initial response because Harris became the candidate? If so, was it gender or race-based objection?
@Jane22
From context, I would guess it's because of the disgusting way Biden's age was deployed against him. The way old people are treated and talked about sometimes is not any better than racism or misogyny
@Catvalente
@Jane22 No, it was fear that it would become a free for all and Harris would be skipped over, replaced by a white man, and on top of that, someone younger than her being pushed out because he was too old
@Catvalente A 78 year old friend of mine told me a few days ago, that if the Dems dump Biden, then she would not vote. I begged her and she said, well she'd actually done OK financially under Trump and as yet I have not changed her mind.
@wcow @Catvalente Wouldn't she like to have a female president in her lifetime?

@samhainnight @Catvalente

She's come round. She was being petulant . . .

@Catvalente I did and because it's Harris, they'll now vote for Trump
@Catvalente you are so right 👍🏾.
I have been voting since I was 18. I have been disillusioned at times. However, I do it to continue the democratic process which gives me a voice. My voice May be small. But I am heard in each election. I am counted..✨✨✨
